What do you think of Edwin?

My due date is tomorrow and I think we have finally found a boys name we both like for DC3. Girls name has been agreed for months, but we're really struggling for boys. We both like Edward but it is a little bit too popular in our circle of friends (we know 5 under 5s) and I'm not very keen on Edmund, but what do you think of Edwin?

I really don't like Edwin. I think it's a really weak name. I've known two Edwins, neither of whom I have liked.

My grandfather was Edwin and my brother is Edward, both lovely people.

Go for Edward. It's a great name. Edwin seems like such a half way house. I don't really see the point if you both like Edward, just because there are other Edwards around......are you realistically going to still know them all in 20 years time? Why go for a half-option?

Edwin was my dad's name (he was quite nice, certainly never smug or slimy! )

It's DS1's middle name and I really like it. Do know, tho, FWIW, that all your Edwards, Edwins and Edmunds will be Ed or Eddie by the time they are 9. All the ones I know are.

Sorry I really don't like Edwin and I don't know what it is about it though you could use the nn of Buzz which is cool.
But really with names like Edward they are always going to be popular, but they are induring names that will last

It always amuses me when people say things like names like Edward will always be popular.

Really? Really? I know three Edwards in one year at primary (yr 6 so they are 11). I also know lots of other Eds of various primary ages. But I can think of one adult Ed I have ever met, and he was in his early 20s. Certainly none over 30. Apart from my dad of course but then he would be over 80 now.

I knew none at school. It just wasn't trendy then. Any more than Thomas, James, Matthew or any of the other "classic, dateless" names people often mention. Everyone at school (I am in my 40s) was called Steve, Stu, Dave, Martin, Mike, Paul. No 2 yo is called Martin or Stuart now. We thought they were dateless names I am sure.
