Baby names

Final shortlist for DC4

Papyrus · 17/08/2011 21:04

We've had great difficulty deciding on names for DC4 and time is running out! We both like names with a vintage feel, but my taste is a little more adventurous than DH's. Ada, Avis and Leopold are all names I love but he has vetoed this time round.

So the shortlist is:

Rose Vita
Matilda Rose
Mabel Rose

Ivan Stanley
William Stanley
George Stanley

sibling for Elizabeth (Elsa/Eliza), Henry and Anna (Annie)

Poor DD2 was nameless for five weeks, so please save us from indecision!

Rose (you like it - what's stopping you?!)

Ivan

Lovely list - I can see why it'd be hard to choose between them.

For a girl, I'd go for Mabel Rose. I love Rose Vita, but think it sounds a teensy bit like a health drink. Matilda is also fine, just don't like it as much as the other two options.

For a buy, I wouldn't choose Ivan, as I don't think it sits so well with the other DCs names. I'd probably choose George over William, but both are great.

Mabel Rose is nice and a bit more unusual but otherwise Rose Vita.

William Stanley

would be my top choices from the list.

I like them all! Matilda is my favourite out of your girls' names (started a thread about this name just today!) but Mabel is adorable and Rose is very pretty. In fact I think Rose goes best with your other DCs' names.

George would be top for me by a long way. Lovely though it is, William is just a bit too popular for me (I know five Williams under the age of three). Although Ivan is nice and unusual, I agree that it doesn't fit as well with your other DCs' names.

Rose, William and George go best with your other DC's names.

Rose and Ivan are lovely and not overused.

I like Rose best for a girl, but Rose Vita sounds a bit like one long name [Rosevita] to me. Maybe just because I've had a long day?

I probably prefer William for a boy, in terms of matching your existing names.

Rose and George my favourites, all lovely names!

I like Matilda Rose and William Stanley

Thanks for all your replies

mrswoodentop I love Vita too, but DH is not keen.

I think we've just about discounted William as lovely but a bit too popular - I know that George is probably just as common, but I only know one under ten when we know four or five Williams.

At the moment my favourites are Mabel and Ivan and DH Matilda and George.
We're doomed!

We both adore Rose though so might end up with that as a compromise.

With your other children I'd say Rose and Ivan.

I was going to say William, but if you've ruled that out then George. As for the girl's I can't choose between them tbh.

William or George are lovely. Not keen on Stanley, but as a middle name it is fine.

Matilda is lovely. I'm a bit indifferent to Rose tbh, but agree with others in that Rose Vita trips along a little too comfortably - sounds a bit like Ryvita or wine or flavoured mineral water.

Mabel - sorry I have never understood why people like it. There are some gorgeous old fashioned names, but this just conjures up images of downtrodden scullery maids wearing house coats and rollers in their hair!

I think the problem is that I could quite happily call the baby any of those names. My one reservation about Matilda is that I don't like either Mattie or Tilly and its bound to get shortened isn't it?

I went out with a friend tonight and she said that Mabel with our surname (begins with a 'm') sounds like a character from Balamory!

Matilda could be shortened to Tilda, but it doesn't have to be shortened - I know people with names that are traditionally shortened (Catherine, Elizabeth etc.) but they have used their full names throughout their lives.

Love them all but would go for Matilda or George I think

I'd go for Matilda or William(I have a William) but Rose is pretty too, though I agree that Rose Vita sounds like mineral water. Vita Rose is really nice.
I hate Mabel but I love Maybelle, turns an ugly name into a pretty one IMO

Vita Rose (I know that wasn't on the list!) and Ivan Stanley would be my favourites. Not too keen on Stanley but it's OK as a middle name, and Ivan is fantastic.

Just to complicate matters DH has decided he actually rather likes Clara after vetoing it for DD2!

I really, really love Ivan - but can see that George might be be more in keeping with the other DCs names.

I'm still mourning the loss of Ada - that would be my number one choice and it goes beautifully with the other DC. But DH has absolutely put his foot down, saying that it is too old fashioned and she'll be bullied. I personally can't see any difference between Ada or Ava/Eva etc.

I wonder if I agree to Matilda - would it be too much of stretch to use Ada as a nickname, then we've both got our way?

Everytime I hear of Rose for a middle name I think of the sentence Matilda Rose from the chair and left the room.

(no help at all that!!)

But I do love it as a first name.
