Sibling for Rowan?

DD is Rowan, and DC2 is due imminently.

DH and I are really struggling to come up with names - any suggestions?

We love DD's name, especially the nature-y side of it and the mythology that surrounds it. We'd like to give DC2 a name that lives up to this too, but we're really stuck!

Any suggestions? (NO idea if it's a boy or a girl!)

Sorry your first is Rowan.

babyneedsaname Mon 08-Aug-11 08:14:28

Thanks, I like Jago a lot, but DH not keen.

This is even harder the second time round than it is first time!

Quite like Wren for a girl - what do you think? (Again DH not keen!)

How about:

Felix or Bryn for a boy

Hazel or Seren for a girl

babyneedsaname Mon 08-Aug-11 16:45:48

I like Hazel and Felix!

Our other problem is that we both come from quite large families, and we are trying to avoid giving our DC the same name as any of our immediate relations or close friends. We're not afraid of being a bit "unusual" in our choice, but not too crazy. DH has 4 brothers, 2 names each, which rules out 10 names (all classic boys names) I have one brother and one sister, and we have 4 neices and nephews, the nephews have 3 names each, which is another 6 written off... and then I have 11 cousins!

How about names from Norse mythology? We liked Freya last time, but chose Rowan instead, as Freya seemed to be getting more and more popular. Maybe a bit Scandinavian sounding?

Will go and have a look at Babynology, thanks!

Freya is an excellent name and actually if you read the top 100's it doesn't chart all terribly highly at all except once in 2004 when it made to no. 33. Unlike a lot of females in mythology Freya was neither anyone's victim nor a total cow, in fact she was pretty admirable on most levels, see Wiki for an introduction. It also continues the nature theme as Freya was held responsible for the coming of spring, the fertility of the crops and she was the God to make offerings to if you wanted a safe sea crossing.

Down here in the less tamed parts of Pagan-country we are currently seeing quite a few the following for girls...
Freya
Hazel
Senara (local saint in the village of Zennor, known for the legend of the Mermaid of Zennor)
Saffron
Aurora
Briar (or [[http://www.islesofscillyholidays.co.uk/bryher.html Bryher)
Indigo

Should say:
Briar (or Bryher

I give up! I am not correcting my corrections!

www.nymbler.com is also good for suggesting similar names - though it's American so has that slant to its suggestions.

Torin (M) from Thor- norse god.
Graihagh (F) (pron Greya) it's a Manx Gaelic name.

Not sure if this will help but my DD is called Rowan, she is now joined by my DS who is called Noah. I love both of their names, nearly as much as I love them!!

I have a Cillian and a Rowan - 2 boys.

You could steal Lumen from the character in Dexter, it seems quite cool to me.

I also like Eben for a boy, meaning rock.
Girls - I like Robin and I like Ciara
