How was my Nan's friend's name likely to be spelt...?

My Nan had a good friend who she talked about a lot, and her name was pronounced 'Marry'. Is this likely to have been a shortened version of something, like, say, Marigold...? Or is it another way of pronouncing Marie (which I would pronounce MaREE)? Thanks, and sorry for the ignorance! smile

My friend's mum is Marie, pronounced Marry.

TIDDLYMUM Fri 05-Aug-11 22:29:45

Marie, I would say x

Darnsarfupnorf Fri 05-Aug-11 22:30:47

I was going to say the same, could get annoying correcting everyone all the time!

YY like Marie Stopes ('Marrie' Stopes)

DuelingFanjo Fri 05-Aug-11 22:31:54

it would be Mari in Wales, was there a Welsh connection?

FellatioNelson Fri 05-Aug-11 22:32:17

My mum has a cousin called Marie but she pronounces it Mar-ree, with a long aar sound. I also know a woman whose name is Marrie. I would guess it is short for Marilyn, or Marian.

NicwNacw Fri 05-Aug-11 22:32:25

Was she Welsh? A popular welsh girls name is 'Mari'

iskra Fri 05-Aug-11 22:32:58

No, Marie Stopes pronounced it MAH-ree, not Marry.

NicwNacw Fri 05-Aug-11 22:33:28

Sorry Dueling Fanjo - cross posts!

Demiwave Fri 05-Aug-11 22:34:41

In Scotland it's Mhairi or Vhairi pn Marry

suzikettles Fri 05-Aug-11 22:35:49

The gaelic for Mary is Mhari or Mairi, pronounced Marry.

FairyArmadillo Fri 05-Aug-11 22:36:07

Mhairi?

slartybartfast Fri 05-Aug-11 22:36:11

DuelingFanjo Fri 05-Aug-11 22:36:13

slartybartfast Fri 05-Aug-11 22:37:04

Dueling and Nicw My Nan was Welsh.. But I don't think her friend was.. Nan actually had two friends who were called this, come to think of it. And I think one of them (maybe both) had Irish connections, if that helps...? Thank you all.
