I'm due in Oct, the gender isn't know.

At the moment we're liking Ariadne Beatrice for a girl. What do you think?

How do you pronounce 'Ariadne' ?

helendigestives Wed 03-Aug-11 18:36:21

I like it. I'm a big fan of Ariadne. (Arrie-ADD-nee)

Iamkenny Wed 03-Aug-11 18:44:28

Ariadne is okay (nn Ari, Addy??? I got stuck) people might struggle with pronoucing it though.

Sorry I can't stand Beatrice - but did punch one once so that might have tainted my view of it, slightly.

But they go together

PonceyMcPonce Wed 03-Aug-11 18:48:22

Wasn't aridane tragically abandoned by her love?

I like a bit of background

Snapespeare Wed 03-Aug-11 19:15:19

love it. she will spend her life spelling it though. smile

sockpoppet Wed 03-Aug-11 19:18:17

Ariadne is uber poncy.

midnightexpress Wed 03-Aug-11 19:18:22

Ariadne makes me think of spiders. I'm not quite sure why. It's something to do with the Greek myth and the ball of wool I expect.

Beatrice, otoh, I like very much.

sockpoppet Wed 03-Aug-11 19:18:57

Araignee is French for spider

InstantAtom Wed 03-Aug-11 19:22:13

Gorgeous names and work very well together smile

CountBapula Wed 03-Aug-11 19:22:38

Arachne was turned into a spider by the goddess Minerva. Ariadne was deserted by Theseus. Two different ladies.

I like it, BTW.

exoticfruits Wed 03-Aug-11 19:22:59

I agree they work well together but I don't like either!

Cherrypi Wed 03-Aug-11 19:34:31

I like them. Also Ariadne was name of character in Inception so some people will have heard of it.

I have an Ariadne - her Dad is Greek and we live on a Greek island. It is a beautiful name and it is never shortened. I have loved the name since reading greek myths as a kid. Even if i didn't have the greek connection I would have still used it. HTH

rachel234 Wed 03-Aug-11 22:07:09

Lovely name, especially Ariadne.

Rhubarbgarden Wed 03-Aug-11 22:12:27

Agree with Sockpoppet.

I like Ariane or Ariana better than Ariadne.

MelinaM Thu 04-Aug-11 11:59:05

Ariadne is beautiful, not at all poncy!

Bandwithering Thu 04-Aug-11 12:09:15

I like it. Although ....... if it were for my child I'd tweak it slightly.

Ariadne and Beatrice would be great names for sisters, but together in the one name they compete a bit.

i would balance the strength of Ariadne with something much softer. Ariadne Joy
Ariadne Beth
Ariadne Elle
Ariadne Maeve
Ariadne Leigh

JanMorrow Fri 05-Aug-11 11:43:09

Ah I love Ariadne!

Ephiny Fri 05-Aug-11 11:50:50

Don't particularly like either, and together they are just 'too much' somehow! Ariadne is nicer than Beatrice, but not too keen. Do you like Arianne - similar sound but softer and just flows better IMO.

Even people saying they don't like those names is useful to hear because it helps get a feel for how my potential new daughter would be thought of (or not).

So far no one's saying anything that causes me to do a total U-turn, but I obviously have got o do a bit more reading on the Greek myths before anything is finalised. I would have got round to it eventually, sometime before the registras appointment for sure, but at least with the major pitfall (rejected lover) clearly indicated I know what I am looking FOR when I do read up.

I thought I spoke a reasonable amount of French, but if you'd asked me the French for spider I would have automatically said it was arachne, I would never have looked it up. Having looked it up it is indeed araignee, which is pronounced a bit ambiguously. I'm glad I asked now, thats definately the sort of thing parents should know before deciding.

Thanks MN, you've been very helpful.

Lovely name. Classic and underused. Great choice imo.

KikiRC Fri 05-Aug-11 20:00:28

Araignee is pronounced 'Arrin-yay', which is quite different, I think.

I like Ariadne (and Beatrice.) Bea is a nice name for a little one.

FairyArmadillo Fri 05-Aug-11 20:24:16

Love Ariadne, indifferent to Beatrice. However both together make a lovely name.
