Oh no... not Guthrie - poor boy would be called Guffy, Farty, Gushie, Gussets and all sorts!

Brodie is a dog's name.

Noah, Flynn, Arlo all nice

Don't like Rita
Dori reminds me of a fish (sp Dory)

Hester-fester etc

Rosa, Sabine, Louisa all nice

I actually quite like Brodie, though it's very American.

Arlo, Noah, Flynn all fine.

What about Marlon instead of Marlo?

Girls - Martha, Sabine, Louisa are my favourites.

Ok, Guthrie is a family name, but I see your point..... I really liked it though..... Brodie, also Scottish (Im Scottish) I really like Flynn and Rosa and Hannah the best... (still way too early to be doing this)! We live in rural South Devon, along with lots of families decamped from London, a bit hippy, a bit lovely around here. Lots of 'interesting' names.... need more boys names....

Those are very varied lists you have there, the girls range from 1980s prostitute (Roxanne) to the lady that makes the teas at the Womens Institute meetings (Rita), and the boys range from the little thug with a buzz cut and a gold hoop earring (Harvey) to the Boden-clad middle class boy with sensible shoes (Noah)!

My favourites are Flynn and Martha (although prefer Marsha)

I love, love love Guthrie!
I like Martha best out of the girls names, love Dori too though.

Rosanne is an alternative to Roxanne. I like Louisa and Sabine. How about:

Meredith
Meryl
Tamsin
Tamara

For boys, I like Arlo and Harvey (though not Cattleprod's Harvey!) You might be able to get Guthrie in as a middle name. How about:

Aidan
Alasdair
Laurence
Ross
Or, get thee to the various Scottish names threads

Thanks fro the votes ladies... I think Arlo looks pretty popular, along with Martha.... Its just so hard. We made a mistake with our second boy, and called him something that we loved but later was picked up and got so over used within the next few years that I wish we had chosen differently. It still suits him, but an unusual name that goes mainstream is the worst....Thats why Im worried about Noah and Arlo, they are of similar type. Hell, its a minefield. I wand something not too common but easy to say, nothing worse for a kid than having to repeat their name when another person asks what it is... (IMO)!

If you don't want common (as in frequent) then I'd avoid Noah, I know about 4 already!

I like all of your girls' names except Dori and Rita. I love the name Sabine/Sabina but have never met one I liked. There is a Romanian name, Roxana, which is softer and a bit less hookerish than Roxanne (also Ruxandra, but I think that's a bit much). Prefer Vita to Vida.

Report
greengoose · 03/08/2011 15:27

OK, Roxanne is now crossed of the list. One too many hooker references. not the career of choice for DD. (Even in Devon, where its hard to get a job).

Boys
Arlo - very weird sounding as a name. Not umpleasant though, quite cute.
Brodie - quite like it. Bit gender amibiguous maybe.
Flynn - lovely.
Guthrie - hideous, sorry.
Harvey - Not overly keen
Marlo - Really don't like it.
Noah - Love it. One of my favourite boys' names.

Girls
Constance - Not keen, a bit prissy.
Dori - stupid fish from finding nemo?
Hannah - Love it. One of my favourite girls' names.
Hester - Okay, a bit harsh sounding.
Inez - Don't like it.
Louisa - Not keen.
Martha - Quite sweet.
Rita - Don't like it.
Rosa - Pretty
Roxanne - Ugh, really dislike.
Sabine - Sounds very French? Not overly keen
Vida - Never heard it, don't really like it.

I would choose Noah and Hannah, hands down. The only others I'd consider would be Flynn, Brodie, Martha and Rosa.

Boys
Arlo -- nice
Brodie -- nice but reminds me of 'broody'
Flynn -- too 'now' and a bit random if you're not Irish and have no family background with the name Flynn
Guthrie -- nice but a tongue twister for a small child
Harvey -- very common
Marlo -- very nice; I prefer the spelling Marlow
Noah -- glad this is off your list. I find it a very wet name

Girls
Constance -- lovely, also love Constanza
Dori -- prefer Dora
Hannah -- a bit bland and 70s
Hester -- lovely
Inez -- lovely
Louisa -- lovely
Martha -- makes me think of hens, clucking and feathers
Rita LOVE very attractive imo in a retro sort of way
Rosa -- lovely
Sabine -- lovely
Vida -- lovely

Very hard to choose from your girls' names. Some really lovely names there.

Would you consider Marley for a boy?

This is really helpful... I need to be having name discussions with OH, but he doesnt care as much as I do (IYKWIM), and once hes settled its hard to shift him. So I want to be a little more clear in my own mind, rather than a huge list. He liked Noah, but I am firm its off now, and can give good reasons, so thats really helpful!! Thanks ladies. Im glad Rita is liked by at least some, although around here Ive noticed a few lately.... also there is a bit of an ongoing trend for girls names that end in a soft 'A' sound... It annoys me at playgroup!

Agree with cattleprod, a very mixed bag of boys names and her descriptions.

I like Constance, Martha and Louisa.

How about Jared, Caleb or Solomon?

Report
greengoose · 04/08/2011 09:52

I really like those boys names pilates, but first two are too like my DS, and last one been used by a friend, shortened to Sol, which I love as well!
