DH wants Sonny for DS who is due soon. I like it but I'm not sure about it

Would you raise an eyebrow/snigger at a boy called Sonny?

I love it. Taught a fab Sonny once. It's cool and cute IMO, but not babyish.

Only if you call your DD "Daughtery"..

InstantAtom · 30/07/2011 08:22

I don't like it, it's too nicknamey.

LetThereBeRock · 30/07/2011 09:24

It's horrid. I agree that it sounds more like a nickname.

And his sister, Cher.

I like it, but the thing that puts me off is that when he is an adult, it will seem an odd name unless he is a surfer dude IYSWIM.

You can call him 'son' for short! I think it sounds American and 70's in a bad way. What are your other choices?

i like it.

Horrid. Agree it is like a nickname and does not work as an adult name.

And it's really popular here (South East)

I have 3 friends with Sonnys and every time one of the Sonnys is having a strop someone wise-cracks "well he's not very sunny today is he?" - it drives my friends mad!

And how will he feel when he's trying to assert some authority over a gang of 18 year olds at work and they say "OK Sonny" and giggle? Or when he's an old man trying to retain some dignity in a care home? Or when he's a nervous Year 7 and the big boys ask him what his name is?

I know a Sonny, he is DC4 after 3 DD's - suits him to a t!

FYI I have never thought of the Sunny side of it, just the Sonny boy..

Love it

Report

WHY do you love it?

Report
gomez · 30/07/2011 10:08

Fab name. Says the mum of a Sonny Smile. DS is nearly 5 I think we have only had a couple of raised eyebrows ind that time.

To be fair I wanted to call him Cosmo so he did get away lightly Grin

I'm going to keep asking "why?" til someone tells me!

vividgingerchilli · 30/07/2011 10:11

Sonny and Cher.
But no, I have seen far more daft/silly/ridiculous unusual names out there. Now I would raise an eyebrow if it was a girl.

Report
vividgingerchilli · 30/07/2011 10:12

If you call him son for short he'll go down as one of those children who allegedly don't know their own name on that report the Daily Telegraph published!

Report
gomez · 30/07/2011 10:15

'cause we liked it Seeker.

DH and I both had relatives who were known as Sonny, although called Nelson and George,
so just didn't seem strange to us.

It just sounds like a really patronising nickname the older generation use for 'orrible little oiks. "You can't leave that 'ere, sonny!"

Report
ensure · 30/07/2011 10:29

I like it, but it sounds perfectly normal to me as I have a Sonny in the family and a friend with a DS Sonny too. So I don't think of it as a nicknamey name at all!

Ooooh I love this name! Am considering it for the bump. But would put Santino on the birth certificate (in The Godfather James Caan's character is called Sonny but it's short for santino). DH may yet 'vito' me though Wink

And Missy for a girl?

I really like it! I know a little Sonny and he is fabulous.

don't let narrow-minded adults put you off a great name. their prejudices are their own problem
