These are in order of my current preference but it does change constantly. Any favourites? Any suggestions that are of similar mien?

Nancy66 Fri 29-Jul-11 13:29:28

I always think that Toby is quite a wet/wimpy name and just prefer Theo to Thoeden but think they're nice choices.

randomimposter Fri 29-Jul-11 13:32:29

Like the top 3, not the bottom 3.

Arthur my favourite. But Rory also good depending on surname. (Also love Bertie, she's our black cat...)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 13:33:19

I like Toby/Tobias and Theoden. How about Bartholomew/Bartie instead of Bertie? MUCH nicer imho! Barnabas?

Cherrypi Fri 29-Jul-11 13:33:44

I like all of those. Several of them were on my longlist but husband didn't like them. Particularly like Theoden and Arthur.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell Fri 29-Jul-11 13:35:50

I have never even heard of Theoden before. Is it pronounced that way? Theo-Den?

pilates Fri 29-Jul-11 13:36:23

Like your top three but not the bottom three.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 13:42:39

Theoden is the name of a King in The Lord Of The Rings.

Nightstar Fri 29-Jul-11 13:42:39

Actually Theoden is from Lord of the Rings, which I'm sure will put a huge number of you off it, but thats the reason I like it

No new similar suggestions?

Nightstar Fri 29-Jul-11 13:43:34

lol, well done Remus

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 13:47:47

Didn't you like my suggestions Nightstar?

Bertram (Arthurian knight)

Nightstar Fri 29-Jul-11 13:52:53

Thanks Remus, DH dismissed Bartholemew (nn Tolly) and I dont like Barnabus as it would be Barney (big purple dinosaur).

I do like Bertram, which we would probably put on BC for Bertie

Tristan and Hector were on my first list, but got whittled down as not as loved as those in my top 6, but I think Alain is a bit feminine?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 13:54:59

Nooooooooo to Alain being feminine!

Your names are making me think of King's Dark Tower series and Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series AND making me want to read LOTF AGAIN!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 14:03:21

Rowan (LOVE this - dd2 would have been it, had she been ds)
Digory (not so fond of this but has a similar 'feel' to your list)
Hugh (rather than Hugo)

scarlettlips Fri 29-Jul-11 14:08:32

Gosh a list of names that I like...!!!!! That never happens. Therefore I will be of little help smile

if you would push me in order:

Would Bertie be a Albert, Herbert, Gilbert or Robert? Or just plain (lovely as it is) Bertie??

scarlettlips Fri 29-Jul-11 14:09:17

Would you have a middle name OP??

I think Hugo Theoden has quite a ring to it....imo

Nightstar Fri 29-Jul-11 22:07:01

Thanks guys, um... I think Bertie would be Bertram

Yes, we still definitely need a middle name so could use one of the above

Remus, I'm so sorry but I think of Rowan as a girls name! I like Gregory and Digory though (The Magicians Nephew), I really wanted Peter from Lion, Witch and Wardrobe, but I hate 'Pete' and I think its unavoidable in secondary school

EdithWeston Fri 29-Jul-11 22:17:12

I think Rory, Bertie (would this be a nn?)' Arthur and especially Hugo. Toby is OK, but I don't like Theoden (thought it might be a typo for Theodore, which I bet would happen a lot in RL and quickly get annoying).

I really like Bartram, Bertram and Bartholomew (tried and failed to persuade DH into the latter), also Diggory, but prefer Gregor to Gregory.

Some others: Gawain, Percival, Belvedere, Wulfram, Bede, Aidan, Hrothgar, Lucas, Marcus, Marlowe, Cornelius?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Fri 29-Jul-11 22:26:56

This is the best names thread in ages! smile

Love Lucas.
The Cooper series has a Bran (pronounced more like Braaaan she says) which might make a nice middle name for a longer first name - Theoden Bran would work.

IHeartKingThistle Fri 29-Jul-11 22:40:17

I like Arthur.

Chocolocolate Sat 30-Jul-11 00:04:19

My favorites are Rory and Arthur from your list.

EllenJaneisnotmyname Sat 30-Jul-11 00:09:59

Rory would have been a front runner for me but it didn't go with our surname.

MelinaM Sat 30-Jul-11 00:13:16

Love Rory, Bertie and Arthursmile ...and Hugo!

Nightstar Sat 30-Jul-11 10:32:02

Ooh Gregor, had not considered that, it's different yet not wierd, will add it

Digby has been vetoed already off my list by DH, he thought it sounded like a dogs name despite family connection to Digby Jones

Bran, thats new, I'll think about it a bit, I had wanted to add Bram (as in Stoker) but got laughed at (to be fair I do get some odd ideas and have to be reigned in, I dont actually want to give my child an unusual name and I hope my choices are mainstream without being every day)
