Toby as a girls name

Yeah okay I know. But it was used (a lot) as a girls name inthe 1920s-40s. And on it's own it is both a girls and boys name.

But will they then spend their life getting odd looks or will people just think it's a family nn that gets used by everyone?

But DP and I really like it.

So opinions?????

no, sorry.

nope.

fanjolamps Wed 27-Jul-11 23:16:34

No! Just no. Not good at all imho

Littlefish Wed 27-Jul-11 23:18:16

No.

I don't particularly like it as a boy's name, and I definitely don't like it as a girl's name.

I think they will spend their life getting odd looks, and being asked what on earth their parents were thinking of. smile

Was it really used as a girls' name prewar? Never come across it except as a boys name (or dog, jug or carvery)

No. Not aware of it being used prewar as girl's name but even if it was, don't think you should use it now.

yousankmybattleship Thu 28-Jul-11 23:43:29

No. Just no. Awful for a boy or girl.

wehavenochairs Thu 28-Jul-11 23:57:34

I can see it as a bizarre nn for a girl - one of the ones that isn't connected to actual first name, mainly because I can't think of a girls name it could be short for. But actually Toby on Birth cert? somehow - no. Sorry.

Unless as middle name, then a definate girls name as the first name. So for offical things they have a 'girls' name but everyone could call them their middle name - toby.

Valpollicella Thu 28-Jul-11 23:59:06

Awful either way, Razzle?

How so?

Pancakeflipper Fri 29-Jul-11 00:03:30

lalabaloo Fri 29-Jul-11 16:14:47

It's brilliant! I went to school with a Toby who was a girl and she was one of the coolest people there, nobody ever batted an eyelid about her name. In fact, it was only as I got older I realised it was a boys name as well.

ragged Fri 29-Jul-11 16:15:48

NO
