Baby names

Winter?

MammaInTheMaking · 23/07/2011 15:23

What do we think about the name Winter for a DD?

Other names I love are:

Violet
Cerys
Georgia
Avril

DP has mixed feelings with these, though does really like Winter...

Are there any other suggestions along these lines that aren't too "cutesy" but also not too common?

Winter - not sure, would you want to be thought of as cold, chilly, unfriendly?
Violet - like
Cerys - OK
Georgia - like
Avril - too much like Bovril and anvil, prefer April

How about Coralie, Juliet, Ianthe, Aster, Cara, Miranda?

Winter - not sure. Now awful. I like Win or Winnie for short more than Winter.

Violet - ok, bit prissy. Again, it's kind of nice though. Pretty in a victorian way. It's come back but not as popular as in Victorian times.

Cerys - no really dislike this one. Very harsh

Georgia - I like this one.

Avril - urr, No. Bit frumpy sorry!!

What about Winifred with Win or Winnie for short?

Thanks PaperBank! Hadn't thought of the whole Bovril thing!!!! Haha!!

My 2 faves are Violet and Georgia too, though DP thinks Violet is a granny name... I keep telling him to just think about the flower Smile

From your suggestions I do like Juliet and Aster.

Bandwithering Yeah, Winter has kind of grabbed my attention...Not sure if I'm it loving it but it's sort of caught my eye. So mulling it over really...

With the others I sort of know I do like them, however I'm on the look out for some others.

Goodness it's tricky!!

I think Winter is a boys' name in some places, so on those grounds, no.
Violet and Georgia are nice - or how about Helena or Hester?

MammaInTheMaking · 23/07/2011 16:15

Nah not so hot on Esther...

Forgot that Rosa was on my list too but DP poo-pooed it!

I like winter but not brave enough to use it! Winter Violet or Violet Winter is nice.

Winter-NO!
Georgia is pretty.

How about Vivienne? I think the nickname Vivi is so bright and happy and, literally, full of life.

(Couldn't get it past my DH though)

I'm kind of liking Winter but had a lot to drink this evening. But how do you feel about Winnie as a possible nn OP?

I saw it on an old family tree recently, and rather liked it. But it was a boy's name there.

There is a boy in DD2's class called Winter. Unfortunately his surname is an item of clothing and the combination always makes me honk with laughter.

Is your baby due during the winter? I don't have an opinion on it to be honest. I don't like or dislike it. Maybe it's because I think summer is an awful name... And I wonder when the child was born. It always seems to go like this;
Mother: her names summer.
Me: how old is she?
Mother: she will be 1 in January.
Me: Hmm

On the other hand I LOVE violet!! I wanted it for DD2 but DP vetoed it :( It's a very strong pretty name to me.

Her birthday is in January (winter month ) and I wanted to call her Santa (Scandinavian I think it originates from) we ended up compromising

I love Santa

Winter is fab. If I was brave enough or brimming with those crazy pg hormones I would call a future DD Winter.

I love Shadow of the Moon by MM Kaye where it's the name of the heroine. The mother gives birth in the heat of the plains of India during the Raj and is homesick for the coolness of home (England) and with her dying breath names her daughter Winter.

Also, I think winter is a beautiful time of year, I love cold and snow and ice on trees.

It's lovely.

Winter is a great name love it, might put it on my future list. Love all your names, except georgia, dont really like feminine versoins of masculine names.

I came across a woman called Storm once. My initial reaction was what a ridiculous name but she carried it off superbly and it really grew on me. Winter just makes me think of bare branches, grey skies and chilblains though.

Thanks so much for everyone's thoughts!!

My absolute favourite is Violet. I think it's super pretty but also a strong name.

I appreciate the pros and cons of Winter. I'm not totally sold on calling our future LO Winter but it is playing on my mind so i'm not discounting it.

No bun in the oven yet, but just got the green light from DP to start trying. I've felt like a mum in the making for a few years now and just super excited to be able to have these conversations FOR REAL!

:)
