Initials V.D - is that terribly bad still?

V.D is the old fashioned way of saying S.T.D isnt it?
Is it still used these days?
Is it unspeakably cruel to give a child these initials?

FairyArmadillo Wed 20-Jul-11 18:42:19

I'd personally steer clear of it.

DuelingFanjo Wed 20-Jul-11 18:44:04

no, it's not cruel.

Cruel is bread and water and living in a box under the stairs. Go for it. My son's initials (first and middle name) are BJ and apparently I have done the worst thing possible to my child. personally I think people need to get a grip about initials.

Colliewollydoodle Wed 20-Jul-11 18:46:26

My sons are LSD! Only one who has ever mentioned it to me was a primary school teacher of a certain age who wore a lot of chiffon!

deemented Wed 20-Jul-11 18:46:37

Manshapes initials are STD.

Nowt wrong with VD, imo.

Colliewollydoodle Wed 20-Jul-11 18:47:25

Oh! Actually my other sons initials are TSD, haha bit close!

Fifis25StottieCakes Wed 20-Jul-11 18:57:40

I had Bo for dd3 until i realised with her 2nd name you got BOG

PaperBank Wed 20-Jul-11 19:39:36

I'd avoid it.

WiiUnfit Thu 21-Jul-11 11:11:40

Can you not add a middle name to avoid the 'V.D' initials?

Tbh though, I think most people won't even pick up on it, I have only just realised I know a 'V.D' & it had never crossed my mind before.

Bandwithering Thu 21-Jul-11 16:45:04

Don't do it.

lizzieloubee1 Thu 21-Jul-11 16:49:19

I think it's fine, hardly anyone calls them VDs any more.

mathanxiety Thu 21-Jul-11 16:50:28

Please don't do it. I knew a girl whose initials were ST and she had a horrible time of it. VD would be 10 times worse.

Bear with me with this...

There's a show called Vampire Diaries. US fans shorten it to VD and have no problems, UK fans snigger too much and have to call it TVD because we're childish and silly we still think of it as the precursor/alternate to STDs.

Having said that, I can't remember the last time I saw someones name as initials or wrote my own as just initials so it'll probably go unnoticed.

scarlettlips Thu 21-Jul-11 17:12:05

God no...my friend has initials VD (32) and no one has ever commented....

Go go for it!

thisisyesterday Thu 21-Jul-11 17:15:18

hmm when I read it I did think veneral disease yes.
but that doesn't mean that in 15-20 years it will have the same meaning.

you could always use a middle name?

MumblingRagDoll Thu 21-Jul-11 17:20:17

I didnt get what you were getting at with the title of yur OP so I think VD is fine....it sounds kind of Roman numerical-y to me!

AnonymousBird Thu 21-Jul-11 17:23:43

Unspeakably cruel in the extreme.

Pancakeflipper Thu 21-Jul-11 17:28:42

I would do a private stupid snigger at V.D.
One of mine has the initials HRM

NattersAndMutters Thu 21-Jul-11 17:36:25

There was a girl with these initials when I was at school who had them hugely emblazoned across all her exercise books. She clearly had no clue about the connotations, and no one liked to say anything to her about it. We just sniggered behind her back, little shits that we were. grin

Amapoleon Thu 21-Jul-11 17:43:37

I think only people of a certain age would recognise it ( i'm 40). I had a snigger the other day over the same thing, not very mature I know. I'm sure people under a certain age wouldn't bat an eyelid. If you like the names use them.

NattersAndMutters Thu 21-Jul-11 17:45:57

I'm of a certain age. To me STD is a telephone code grin

Catsu Thu 21-Jul-11 19:30:14

Hmmm mixed opinions!!!!
Not sure now!
There would def be a middle name as well, which is not decided on yet, so full initials would not be V.D but would be V.A.D or something like that. If we did call her this name then obviously we wouldn't mention the initials and would use all 3 initials where appropriate but I am just thinking of those situations where she would say her first name and surname only (like at school you dong really mention middle names) anx people might put 2 and 2 together and see V.D

still not sure!!
Choices are between violet and alice btw...

WiiUnfit Fri 22-Jul-11 22:52:07

What about Alice Violet Dsurname then?

summerfruitsalad Fri 22-Jul-11 23:00:43

They're my initials! Got married 2 years ago and have had no comments at work which is the only time my initials get used. I think when your DC comes round to going to school none of the children will know what it means anyway!

Tipper1965 Wed 25-Nov-15 13:28:11

It is really cruel to give a child these initials. A name should be a gift and not a curse. This was done to me and I can honestly say it has made my life miserable. I have changed my name. But there is no escaping it. I will never forgive my parents.
