Initials V.D - is that terribly bad still?

V.D is the old fashioned way of saying S.T.D isnt it?
Is it still used these days?
Is it unspeakably cruel to give a child these initials?

I'd personally steer clear of it.

DuelingFanjo · 20/07/2011 18:44

no, it's not cruel.

Cruel is bread and water and living in a box under the stairs. Go for it. My son's initials (first and middle name) are BJ and apparently I have done the worst thing possible to my child. personally I think people need to get a grip about initials.

My sons are LSD! Only one who has ever mentioned it to me was a primary school teacher of a certain age who wore a lot of chiffon!

Nowt wrong with VD, imo.

I'd avoid it.

Can you not add a middle name to avoid the 'V.D' initials?

Tbh though, I think most people won't even pick up on it, I have only just realised I know a 'V.D' & it had never crossed my mind before.

Don't do it.

lizzieloubee1 · 21/07/2011 16:49

I think it's fine, hardly anyone calls them VDs any more.

mathanxiety · 21/07/2011 16:50

Please don't do it. I knew a girl whose initials were ST and she had a horrible time of it. VD would be 10 times worse.

Bear with me with this...

There's a show called Vampire Diaries. US fans shorten it to VD and have no problems, UK fans snigger too much and have to call it TVD because we're childish and silly we still think of it as the precursor/alternate to STDs.

Having said that, I can't remember the last time I saw someones name as initials or wrote my own as just initials so it'll probably go unnoticed.

hmm when I read it I did think veneral disease yes.
but that doesn't mean that in 15-20 years it will have the same meaning.

you could always use a middle name?

I didnt get what you were getting at with the title of yur OP so I think VD is fine....it sounds kind of Roman numerical-y to me!

Report
AnonymousBird · 21/07/2011 17:23

Unspeakably cruel in the extreme.

Report
Pancakeflipper · 21/07/2011 17:28

I would do a private stupid snigger at V.D.
One of mine has the initials HRM

There was a girl with these initials when I was at school who had them hugely emblazoned across all her exercise books. She clearly had no clue about the connotations, and no one liked to say anything to her about it. We just sniggered behind her back, little shits that we were. Grin

Amapoleon · 21/07/2011 17:43

I think only people of a certain age would recognise it ( i'm 40). I had a snigger the other day over the same thing, not very mature I know. I'm sure people under a certain age wouldn't bat an eyelid. If you like the names use them.

I'm of a certain age. To me STD is a telephone code Grin

Hmmm mixed opinions!!!!
Not sure now!
There would def be a middle name as well, which is not decided on yet, so full initials would not be V.D but would be V.A.D or something like that. If we did call her this name then obviously we wouldn't mention the initials and would use all 3 initials where appropriate but I am just thinking of those situations where she would say her first name and surname only (like at school you dong really mention middle names) anx people might put 2 and 2 together and see V.D

still not sure!!
Choices are between violet and alice btw...

They're my initials! Got married 2 years ago and have had no comments at work which is the only time my initials get used. I think when your DC comes round to going to school none of the children will know what it means anyway!

It is really cruel to give a child these initials. A name should be a gift and not a curse. This was done to me and I can honestly say it has made my life miserable. I have changed my name. But there is no escaping it. I will never forgive my parents.
