Have narrowed it down to these two - we have rejected Stanley as I am worried it will be the next Archie.

Which is rarer? Any views?

Is Marcus a bit 'meh'?

Love Frank!

Marcus, not so much....

jenniec79 Mon 11-Jul-11 23:58:08

Frank definately. It's a family name, DB has Francis as a middle name, and I'd love to use Francis or Frances at some point, with potential for Frank, Fran or Frankie as nn depending if girl or boy. Realistically will probably end up having to be a middle name (good friend's DP is a Fran too)

Frank is a hideous name. And should have died a death long ago.

Beccabop Tue 12-Jul-11 00:59:12

Oh God, its up to you. Never ask too many people for an opinion! See which one suits when baby arrives smile

I prefer Frank. Even better - Francis with Frank as nickname.

Marcus is a bit "wet", prefer just Mark.

Rhubarbgarden Tue 12-Jul-11 07:35:25

I prefer Marcus. Frank is awful.

Gosh, they are very different names. Am surprised someone could have those two as their final two. A bit like narrowing it down to 'Edward or Spaceraider'.

I am not a fan of Marcus at all. I think it is a weak name, and always sounds a bit too much like Mucus to me. Certainly every Marcus I have ever know has been called Mucus, either fondly or less so.

Frank, on the other hand, is a fabulous name. Transcends class and social boundaries. Good, solid name. He can be anything he wants to be with a name like Frank. No one makes assumptions about a Frank.

In fact I think I'll add Frank to our name list. Is Frank ever short for anything?

kiwijesta Tue 12-Jul-11 07:45:58

I love love love both these names, we had a DD but they were in our final two as boys names. I also think Frank should be Frank not Frances and then as a nn. If I was pushed I'd say Frank, but only because it's my Grandfathers name.

Marcus is a lovely, strong underused name, haven't taught one for years smile

LetThereBeRock Tue 12-Jul-11 10:28:38

Marcus,definitely Marcus,and it's not at all 'meh'.
You can't call a lovely baby 'Frank', It's about the ugliest name I can think of,and should not be inflicted on a baby.

Love Frank, but love Franklin even more as it could be Frank, Frankie or Franklin depending on age, (Frankie for little boy/toddler), Franklin (Older), Frank (Old man!)
I know a Marcus and he was never 'Mucus', usually Marc if shortened or his surname. Sounds strong but I still prefer Frank.

Bandwithering Tue 12-Jul-11 20:03:16

I love Marcus! Great name. A roman classic which will stand the test of time I think. I also love Frankie but it's more of a temporary love..... Frankie is very trendy right now (and it's a name I do like, I hate some trendy names). BUT..... weighing it all up, definitely Marcus.

PhishFoodAddiction Tue 12-Jul-11 20:06:58

I think Frank is a horrible name for a baby. Frankie isn't as bad, but is usually a girl's nn here.

I'm not keen on Marcus either.

Would probably choose Marcus over Frank though.

usualsuspect Tue 12-Jul-11 20:08:13

Frank is awful

mo3d Tue 12-Jul-11 20:08:30

I like airbornes suggestion of Franklin, then nn Frank, because I can imagine saying 'this is my baby, he's called Franklin', but I can't imagine saying 'this is my baby, he's called Frank'.

I think Frank is a fab name, but def a name for an older person. IYKWIM

EverythingsNotRosie Tue 12-Jul-11 20:09:44

Go with Francis and Frank for short- my brother is called Francis and he's lovely smile!

Jenniec79, I like Frances for girl but I'm worried she'll get called Fanny...

LonelyLinda Tue 12-Jul-11 20:15:56

Go for Stanley, a lovely name, a beautiful name for a baby boy, even nice as a man called Stan, sorry can't condone frank or marcus

doggus Tue 12-Jul-11 23:34:13

Talk about divided! I guess we chose love it or hate it names.

Funny to me that some consider Marcus a 'weak' name. I have always felt the opposite: a really strong, masculine name. I always imagine people with that name as quite solidly-built men!

doggus Thu 14-Jul-11 17:41:06

TheSecondComing - clearly we share excellent taste.

Jojay Thu 14-Jul-11 17:45:23

Marcus, without a doubt.

Frank screams' trendy name' at me, whereas Marcus is timeless and classic

chippy47 Thu 14-Jul-11 17:54:54

Marcus (only so my Frank does not become too popular -Frank is a cool name and anyone who says different is an idiot and have children with stupid names. smile
