.....our names are now officially sorted..........I think.

I did have a wobble earlier today due to an article being in a paper, but I think we're happy

Girl - Eidith Lily (Eidi for short)
Boy - Seth Lucas

I'm hoping that I should be safe from other children in the class having the same name........???

moondog Fri 08-Jul-11 19:48:37

Eidith?
Sounds like a Brummie trying to say Edith.

thisisyesterday Fri 08-Jul-11 19:51:27

lovely names. specially Seth smile

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 19:52:09

Because of the spelling? Its exactly the same as Edith, just think it looks much nicer written down with the 'i' as there's also an 'i' in our surname - also prefer Eidi rather than Edi and it will mostly be Eidi that we use.

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 19:53:58

Thanks thisisyesterday - amazingly DH picked that name..............by opening the name book and it was the first one he saw and read out. Unbelivable considering I'd gone through about 3 books and had no ideas lol.

catsareevil Fri 08-Jul-11 19:55:14

People might struggle with the non-standard spelling of Edith. Seth is reasonably popular, but you will probably be OK from a point of view of there not being any others in the class.

TheOriginalFAB Fri 08-Jul-11 19:55:52

If you are going to call her Edith but spell it Eidith she will spend her whole life spelling her name. I had 20 + years of having to spell my name and it is pants.

itsastrawpoll Fri 08-Jul-11 19:56:36

Is Eidith an accepted spelling or a made up one?

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 19:58:59

Ah well, she'll get used to having to spell it out smile I'm possibly one of the strange people that liked having a surname that I had to spell out, my married name is boring and never a problem to spell so she'll get off lightly with that bit at least.

Seth, popular, really?? sad

I think both are meant to be around about the 125th on popularity lists.....so not way out there but not 'common' either.

smileychicken Fri 08-Jul-11 19:59:26

I love Seth Lucas and Edith Lily but I am afraid the spelling of Eidith you have chosen doesn't appeal to me at all. Sorry! Do what you feel happiest with though.

thisisyesterday Fri 08-Jul-11 20:01:01

i have had 30+ years of spelling my name too.

it's an accepted spelling of an incredibly popular name....

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 20:02:09

It's an accepted one, it was in the books when I looked otherwise I wouldn't have thought about it I don't think.

If she chooses just to refer to herself as Eidi (which she probably will and I don't mind) then she'd probably end up spelling that all the time too.

iMemoo Fri 08-Jul-11 20:02:20

Sorry but there are 2 Seth's at the toddler group I go to.

SwearyMary Fri 08-Jul-11 20:04:17

Won't people call her Eyedith?

Edith is a lovely name.

itsastrawpoll Fri 08-Jul-11 20:06:06

Are you canvassing for opinions on the names themselves, or just whether or not they are popular?

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 20:07:08

Thisisyesterday - you think Eidith/Edith is popular too - really??

Don't get me wrong, I don't want a crazy name like 'apple' or something celeb like, but after being one of at least 3 people of the same name in my class when I was at school, I really don't want to end up with a name where there's another one in the class.

NurseSunshine Fri 08-Jul-11 20:09:06

IMO Eidith looks like EYEdith and Eidi looks like EYEdi. Just spell it properly!

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion Fri 08-Jul-11 20:09:35

Really whether they are popular I guess - I thought I was quite safe but 2 Seth's in one toddler group is quite a big surprise!! shock sad

Tw1nkle Fri 08-Jul-11 20:11:09

I love the name Seth - I hope it doesn't get too popular, as I'd love it if we ever have a boy!!!

My DD is called 'Sienna' - that was about 125th on the list - there are 3 at the same nursery!!!

Catsu Fri 08-Jul-11 20:12:16

Love edith and Seth but eidith def looks odd. If I saw it I'd call her eye-dith
much prefer edith. Esp if you've got ei in your surname too!

catsareevil Fri 08-Jul-11 20:12:38

If you really want to be sure that there wont be any children with the same name at school then I think that you need to look for something more unusual. I think that Edith is fairly unusual, but givent the trend in baby names I expect that it will become popular, and you might find that someone else will have had the same idea as you (ie trying to go for something a little unusual, but within the trend, if that makes sense)

SwearyMary Fri 08-Jul-11 20:12:58

What do you mean safe? For goodness sake call your children what you like but please do consider confusing spellings. Not so much the correction that it will take but the annoyance factor for everyone.

Eidith is Eyedith. Eidi is Eyedee.

DorisIsAPinkDragon Fri 08-Jul-11 20:15:15

Seth here too he's 3.

Agree with the spelling and pronunication issues you really will be making life difficult for her. Love Edith though!

elah11 Fri 08-Jul-11 20:15:52

Both Seth and Edith are lovely but Eidith just looks made up, sorry!! People will think you didnt know how to spell it properly when you named her hmm

littlemisslozza Fri 08-Jul-11 20:16:17

I like them both but my first thought about 'Eidith' was that it was pronounced 'Eye-dith' and therefore 'Eidi' would be like Heidi but without the H. I imagine that a lot of people would also assume that so personally if you want to call her Edith I would spell it the traditional way.

I know two baby Seths but it's not ridiculously popular, just growing in popularity compared to recent years.
