Does anyone know any nice but unshortenable names? People shortening lovely names bugs the crap out of me so I need something that it can't happen to!! We love Freya but no doubt it will be shortened to 'Frey' and she will be far from an old piece of material!!

My name can't be shortened and it pissed me off no end as a child.

You'll probably find that people will lengthen a name if it can't be shortened. EG Janey, Jilly, Annie, etc.

If a name can't be shortened, it will get lengthened, or nicknames will be invented. Sorry, but it's inevitable.

I knew a guy called Ian, and everyone called him Ee, to his mother's eternal horror Grin

Anything can probably be shortened, if someone really put their mind to it! I think these ones would be less likely to get it:

Elle, Belle, Mary, Maeve, Kay, Faye, Zara, Verity, Vera, Tess, Leonie, Bianca, Cilla, Rita, Giselle, Sonia, Ida, Rhona, Olga, Orla, Wanda.

Jane, Joy, Beth, Nina, Belle, Elle, Lynne, Faith, Ruth

I definitely agree that names will be lengthened if they're not shortened! So that Jane will become Janey and so on. I think maybe two syllables feels more instinctive or something... my children's NICK names all have two syllables. Nick names tend to. Bugsy, Podgie, Sookey and so on.

My Mum picked mine and DB's name as she thought they wouldn't be shortened, they both were. I am Amy and it is Aim or Aims. My DD is Rose and gets called Rosie by all and sundry.

i have a name that doesn't have an automatic shortened name, so other people seem to make up their own Confused

I always introduce myself as my full name, but i have 5 other shortened names that various people use and i can't be arsed to worry about it. I don't really like my name, it is unusual.

Hence i gave both my children names that have shortened versions.

It doesn't matter what you call them someone will shorten or lengthen itjust choose something you like and call them that (no matter what everone else does!)

Don't people just end up lengthening short names? That is what I noticed, kids call grace, gracey for example...doesn't matter what name you choose, kids will customise it!

I have a Chloe and her friends call her clo, or cloclo, or caz for some reason...

Why don't you want your DC to be able to shorten their name? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean they will also hate it. And at the end of the day, it's their name...
