Philip and possibly Philippa. Anything else is just silly.

No, I think Piper, Pippin, and Penelope would work too.

RaahhfaNadalsMyToyboy Fri 01-Jul-11 09:10:59

Philippa is the best name- FACT. As is Pippa.

No bias here, oh nogrin

i like the idea of Pip for Penelope, though.

Hedwig3 Fri 01-Jul-11 11:07:39

I think Pip/Penelope seems a bit strange

but on the other hand... why not?!

SloganLogan Fri 01-Jul-11 11:47:40

Are you looking for a boy's name or a girl's name?

GwendolineMaryLacey Fri 01-Jul-11 12:11:16

I don't get this. Either you accept that a diminutive comes from a specified name, which mostly they do. Or you throw caution to the wind and let it come from any old name you like.

Pip is the associated diminutive for Philip/pa. When it comes to "what name could we get away with using it for", well then Mary, or Nigel, whatever floats your boat.

SloganLogan Fri 01-Jul-11 12:24:33

Agree, Gwendoline! grin

FriggFRIGG Fri 01-Jul-11 15:04:12

well actually its DP's nan's name, so we would like to use it at some point.but her name is just Pip,and although its nice,id prefer a longer name and i wasnt sure what it was usually short for, except maybe Philip/pa.

i like Pipin a lot,but i think that may be cruel.....

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Jul-11 15:42:56

Well, I think Pip coming from Penelope makes a lot more since than it coming from Mary... confused

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Jul-11 15:44:30

Sarah Jessica Parker has a brother named Pippin. Pippin Parker. grin

pointydog Fri 01-Jul-11 15:46:11

Dp's nan was christened Pip?

FriggFRIGG Fri 01-Jul-11 16:15:45

Yep....unless she's lying hmmgrin

moshchops Sat 02-Jul-11 01:36:27

We had a dog called Pip when I was a kid. My mum named the dog for her brother Philip?!?

PipFEH Mon 04-Jul-11 14:17:12

I am Philippa, known as Pip. The only other name I've heard it shortened from is Philip, so the same thing really. I think Pippa stands alone reasonbly well these days, if you're not keen on Philippa.

ridinglilli Tue 12-Jul-11 00:57:46

Pip to me is shortened form of Phillipa or Pippa for a girl or Phillip for a boy. However I did have a cat called Pipsqueak (whose name was shortened to Pippa or Pip) Lol grin
