baby name wobble with 3 weeks to go

I have posted before and now just wanting some fresh opinions before my little girl arrives in 3 weeks time.

Me and hub have 3 names on the top of our list. Trouble is i find i'm always on the look out for something better, its like nothing is perfect enough for my baby girl. Has anyone else felt like this or am i just hormonal and

so our names are as follows:

Laila - the name we've always loved and said would be our little girls name - but sinse becoming pregnant i'm worried its become a little common popular. i hate it spelt layla and if i spell it laila will she have a lifetime of correcting people.

Florence - my hubs fave. i love it too but after IVF and fertility websites i am familiar with the term AF so Flo as a nn would be a no no and Florrie is ok but still not great.

Eliza - My fave. The only thing is that hubby's signifiant ex was Liz (elizabeth) so i wouldn't want Liz as a nn and would it be weird of me to use it if its a derivative of my hubby's ex's name....

names that have been vetoed by dh are beatrice, harriet (hattie) and eleanor and lots of He likes sadie and lexie but i've vetoed them.

any opinions or fresh suggestions would be great

I think as long as you called her Liza or Eliza rather than Liz, shouldn't be wierd at all!

I love hattie, but having a feeling DH would nix that too, and agree - not sure about sadie or lexie!

And not sure about Florence - would always think of Florence and the Machines!!

Like Laila and don't think you would have an issue with people saying it wrong, but it is very unusual!

natsmum100 Sat 25-Jun-11 11:02:35

Laila is lovely - better spelt that way than Layla. I also like Eliza and Sadie. Not so keen on Florence.
You've got great names to choose from and plenty of time to decide.

Eliza is a fab name. I wouldn't associate it with Liz... & my DD is Elizabeth!

TBH I sort of agree with you on Laila becoming "popular" grin & there being nickname issues with Florence (also David Cameron having one would put me off, even though it's a lovely name!).

From the ones you've each vetoed I LOVE Sadie (try it on bump so a day, great under-used name!!) & Hattie (friend just had a gorgeous one & gets nothing but nice comments on her name, do maybe try working on DH!).

I think they are all OK. Prefer Laila as the other two are quite 'old fashioned' but that isn't a bad thing, just personal preference. DD has a friend Eliza and she has Izzi as nn.

poppydaisy Sat 25-Jun-11 11:45:50

Prefer Laila. Lovely and underused.

OneHelluvaBroad Sat 25-Jun-11 11:48:02

Leila is the nicest spelling, imo. I really like it.

Eliza is lovely, too (although definitely suddenly hiked up on popularity).

Florence is OK, but it is definitely the new Ella/Evie/Gracie - middle class mum's name grin

nicolamumof3 Sat 25-Jun-11 12:00:42

am exactly the same! our first dd after three boys is due in 3 weeks, and so i feel the pressure of getting the name right. Chose a boys name just in case!!

Loved Florence too but do not Florrie.

So our shortlist is Constance and Isla but still not sure if right??

I like Eliza and can see more likely to be Liza than Liz tbh?

I think they are all lovely apart from Lexie which you are right to veto, and Sadie is ok but sounds a bit nicknamey.

Leila is nice but would definitely associate with a dark haired child as I think it means night, would findit odd on a very fairchildbut maybe just me.

Agree nicknames for Florence not great.

Iwould go for Eliza or Leila as that seems to be your favourite. Do not think Eliza would get called Liz more likely Liza.

Wormshuffler Sat 25-Jun-11 12:41:33

A child would be Lizzie rather than Liz despite all your best efforts! and then when she is old enough to want to change to Liz, she would be your Liz rather than Liz like DH's ex. Similaly, If you had a Flo that would then be her name rather than Aunt Flo.
I have a Jennifer, who was NEVER going to be a Jenny, until she started calling herself that! I like Sadie too.

Belljar71 Sat 25-Jun-11 12:46:48

I have a Hattie aged 12 and have had nothing but positive comments since she's been born! Never been another one in her school or area where we live[friend is a registrar].Our 2 yr old is Felicity and this seems to be getting more popular[grrrrr] our son is called Dexter Miles and he was born before the tv series!!!

DorisIsAPinkDragon Sat 25-Jun-11 13:14:07

I had Florence beatrice and harriet on our shortlist for dd3.

We have a Lydia nn lydie (and Lula blush)

I love Eliza too but she is quite likely to become a Liz (or Lizzie) (particularly if she's a teenager and knows you don't like it grin)

daisybear Sat 25-Jun-11 13:18:37

thanks for the opinions

i'm very jelous of all those of you with Hatties...i just love love it. Are they Hatties or Harriets with nn Hattie??
i've tried everything to change dh's mind but he's having non of it. even my grandad was Harry and it could be a tribute but he's till not having it. i'll keep trying though...

I was swaying towards Laila and Eliza rather than Florence before i posted and it seems most of you agree too. i think Florence as a middle name as i still love it but the nn's aren't great.

glad no one thinks its a problem having an Eliza if dh's ex is Liz... i wouldn't want her thinking we were weird and named our daughter after i think i just get paranoid....hormones??

nicolamumof 3 i'm glad i'm not the only one having a name wobble. i love your choice of Isla...beautiful. good luck in 3 weeks and lets hope our LO's don't keep us waiting smile

daisybear Sat 25-Jun-11 13:21:11

Lol @ doris.....maybe when she's a teenager i could pretend i love the name Liz and then she won't use it....wink

chillistars Sat 25-Jun-11 13:27:28

I like Laila, and we don't have any at work so it's not a common name IME.

chillistars Sat 25-Jun-11 13:27:47

though wasn't Laila the name of the first dog in!

chillistars Sat 25-Jun-11 13:29:06

Florence is alright, though I'd always think of the Magic Roundabout. Plus if she has sisters - Aunt Flo!
Or Florrie, from the Archers - I think!

chillistars Sat 25-Jun-11 13:29:35

Isla is a gorgeous name, unusual and not at all weird if you know what I mean

daisybear Sat 25-Jun-11 13:29:58

1st dog in space was Laika.... very close though. lol

listentothemusic Sat 25-Jun-11 13:33:54

"Laila - the name we've always loved and said would be our little girls name"

Then go for it. Everything else will always be second best IMO.

Lovely name, don;t think Layla is all that common anyway is it so don't think the spelling would be a huge issue?

Btw, the name I loved for DD1 but DH vetoed is now our DD2's name, so keep working on him wink

Jojay Sat 25-Jun-11 13:35:13

I'm expecting twins very soon and I'm probably going to call the girl Lara. It's a bit like Laila so you might like it. I am willing to share........ as long as you don't live in Warwickshire!grin

UndiscoveredApprentice Sat 25-Jun-11 13:42:02

i love lydia, similar style to your others, but a name in its own right.

or sylvie.

chillistars Mon 27-Jun-11 05:51:46

daisybear, thank you - I knew it was something similar.

exoticfruits Mon 27-Jun-11 06:03:24

Definitely Eliza.( Don't go with Sadie or Lexie-both horrid).
