I've been resisting asking for other people's opinions but now am desperate!

We've got to decide soon ...

Our shortlist is:

Dora
Hester
Iris
Rosa
Rhona
Mabel

Please could you let me know what your opinions are.

Thank you x

Rhona is my favourite out of that list. I know a few Rhonas and they are all fab, strong, capable girls.

Congratulations btw Grin

Dora will be called Dora the Explorer by all her friends by the time she is 3. And the theme tune is IMPOSSIBLE to get out of your head. Otherwise is very sweet name.

My niece is called Mabel, I like, it's old fashioned but in a nice way and sort of quirky.

Can I ask though - what does she look like to you? What do you call her in your head?

I like Iris best x

Do you have a favourite. Our dd was called Pumpkin for 6 weeks until we finally decided to register with the name that was top of our list!

I love Rosa - how about Rosa Mabel - very pretty, easy to spell, not 'of the moment'. Pretty for a newborn, nice for a toddler and my two close friends are Rose and Rosie (in their 30s) and they love their names.

You have lovely taste.

Dora the Explorer - NO!
Hester Sylvester Polyester - not for me
Iris - Like this one
Rosa - love this one
Rhona - Scottish and wears dungarees
Mabel - Victorian parlourmaid

HTH :)

Congratulations by the way! :)

Dora - explorer
Hester - bit of a Lester/lecher but kinda cool too - might bet teased as it is one that could rhyme with stuff
Iris - like it, elegant and old worldy
Rosa - like it and it'll travel easily
Rhona - don't like it, reminds me of a nose
Mabel - LOVE IT! Cool and unique - just lovely.

I've always wondered what happens if you don't register the birth within 6 weeks. For reasons I shall not bore you with, I know the registrar will know the baby exists (almost certainly) and therefore you will get chased up, but seriously, is the sky going to fall in if it takes you 8 weeks rather than 6? Or 10?

Anyway, please don't feel the need for an act of civil disobedience just to fulfil my curiosity, I'll go off and Google after this :)

I like Hester, then Rosa, then Iris. For Dora I like both Theodora and Dorothea (although it would be unusual I guess to shorten Dorothea to Dora?).

I like Rosa and Mabel best too. You have some great names there. Good luck deciding!

Rhona

I knew a lovely girl with this name many years ago. When offered pears from our tree in the garden she refused no thank you with a scowl and said she liked pears from the shop where they where supposed to come from Smile

Hester was on my list when I was pregnant. But I think now, of your names my favourite is Iris.

Rosa is by far the nicest name on your list. It's timeless. Beautiful name.

CakeandRoses · 06/06/2011 22:54

I've always wondered that too tribpot - can you let us know if you do find out please?

I really like these 4 (in preference order):

Rosa - beautiful and timeless
Mabel - pretty (as long as you're not in circles with an Essex/East London where the end L becomes a mashed up W sound. A Joel I knew round those parts was universally known as Jow Hmm)
Iris - I don't like the sound of the word but the meaning is nice
Dora - great name but i'd probably go for a longer name with this as the nn

Hester's ok but not too my taste

Dislike Rhona - seems v different to the rest of the list

Rosa is a wonderful name.

I like Iris and Hester too. And Mabel is a lovely scullery maid name.
