stuck on Jacob/Jake

What comes to mind when you hear the name Jacob?
And/or when you hear the name Jake?
Do you think these names are found cross all social/economic/religious groups?
Or does each shout something (possibly something different for each) when you hear it?
And what do you think of the nickname Jay? Jago?

That's pretty much our only choice of a boy's name, think it's lovely and goes well in most situations :)

Jay is fine for a nickname, although maybe not Jago?

Jacob/Jake is a nice name :) Jacob is a biblical name so it's classic enough not to have narrow connotations.

I loved Jake until a very chavvy friend's mum (friend is 25, her mum has just had ANOTHER baby!!!!) called her's Jake so it's a no-no now!

I really like Jacob but don't like Jake at all. Have you thought about Caleb? Similar sounding but less common.

Jacob is lovely but honestly I do find Jake a little bit the C word. Jago is also lovely.

Jacob is in my shortlist (of 2!) if I have a boy but I'm not struck on Jake - as others point out it will probably get shortened to that - so I'll likely end up going with the other one on the shortlist.

My DH loves Jake but it's had a lukewarm reception from everyone else. In my opinion it just sounds a bit 'naughty' and possibly the C word too.

Shame as Jacob is lovely both in sound and appearance of the word!

I love Jake, I think of cool kids, skater boys, surf dudes, musicians, I really like meeting grown-ups called Jake, they almost always have cool jobs/lives.

Thanks for your feedback. Lechat - I always thought of Jake that way too. A really cool name. All the adult Jakes I know (um, that'll be one) are muso/arty types. But various people (i.e. my mother and a friend in her 50s) have suggested it's a bit C. Does that matter? I'm not sure. But my point is I don't want a name that links him to a particular social class. I think we'll go with Jacob and he can then be a Jake or a Jay or a Jacob depending on whether he shops at Asda or Waitrose ;).

Jellycat - I love the sound of your boy. And come to think of it, the other Jake I used to know (from way back) was studying philosophy at Cambridge. So I think my mother, as ever, is slightly odd. I wonder if she's off on another loop. As it happens, she's German, as is my other 50-something friend who questioned this choice. Right, Jacob (Jay/Jake) it is.

My art teacher at school was a Jake too... All the girls adored him, he used to play us Bowie records' during lessons.

And another Jacob here.....just love the name. We would have abbreviated it to Jake, but he prefers Jacob, as he grew up in the Tweenies era (there is a Jake in the Tweenies). He also likes to call himself Jakob....pronounced Jack-ob.....

Another one with a Jacob here, he's only 13 months so hasn't expressed a preference himself yet.

I don't like Jake as Jakey means Alkie in Scotland.

We call him Jacobi as a nickname and as he is the most scrummy boy ever, Jacob is a fabulous name
