Sian?

What does everyone think of the name Sian?
I want a name that's pretty and girly that an adult wouldn't feel embarrassed about being called.
DH loves it, but I'm not convinced...

I'm afraid I'm not overly keen on it. Plus I wonder if some people would pronounce it sigh-anne? (I say this because I know a Sian and she tells me lots of people do mispronounce it)

I like names like Lilian (nn Lily), Charlotte, Lucy and Martha. I think it is the 1-syllable girls name that puts me off, it sounds harsh rather than pretty. I like 1 syllable names for boys, as they sound strong.

I love the name Martha!

The only Sian I have known spent most of her time explaining that "No, her name wasn't pronounced see-ann". If you are not convinced then maybe you need to think again.

Love Martha, Isabella (Issy), Lily and Milly, btw

Sian is lovely. But like you I rejected one-syllable names for my dds. I wanted pretty names with good nns.

It's a very pretty name and not too common in this generation I like.

usualsuspect is the last person to call a name chavvy. Grin

I knew two Sians at school. One pronounced the way in which Thor intended, the other Sigh-Ann. I used to say it with a silent tut.

Sigh-Ann? Dear Lord NO.

I remember meeting SighAnn at the tender age of 11. She said 'I'm SighAnn'. I merely asked 'why?'

There is no answer btw. There's no good reason for this sort of thing.

I knew 2 Ciera's. One "Keer-Rah" one "See-Ah-Rah"

They hated one another like poison.

A bit dated in Wales. In the 70s, while the Debbies and Claires and Julies were rolling off the production line in England, Wales was busy churning out the Sians.

what about Cheyanne (pronounced shy-anne)

iamnotsuperwoman · 01/06/2011 22:10

If Sian is too short, how about Siana?

Report
smother · 01/06/2011 22:37

Lilian, Lucy and Martha = far far far nicer than Sian.

what about Roisin or Maeve?

Siana

is not a name. Not being funny, but you might as well call your child Jane-a

I like Sian.

The only Sian I know gets fed up of being called Sean or Shan.

Report
DuelingFanjo · 02/06/2011 21:40

some people spell it Shan to get over the pronunciation thing.
