Baby names

Would you let your 5 yo have final say over new baby's name?

Am in a dilemma!!

I've posted on here before about not being able to decide between our 2 final choice names for DC3.

We are undecided between Philippa (Pippa) and Alice

Most people voted for Alice on the thread I started!

I have to say that if I had to choose right now between the 2 names I'd probably go for Alice too. Just by the teeniest tiniest margin it is ahead of Philippa. Still love Philippa though.

DS1 is 5yo and is one of the reasons we found out the sex of DC3 and want to decide on the name. He has ASD and is finding it a bit harder to imagine the new baby as being his new baby sister. We thought that knowing its a girl and will be called 'X' might help.

Since coming to our short list of 2 names DS1 has taken an enormous shine to the name Philippa. He is absolutely determined thats what the babies name is!
I said to him yesterday that maybe it would be a good idea to have both names and call the baby 'Alice Philippa' to see if he would budge. He says 'no, I will call her Philippa Alice'

The fact that he loves the name SO much is making me think that maybe we should just go with it seeing as we cant decide between the two anyway.

Names would either be Alice Elizabeth or Philippa Sally (middle names are family names)

WWYD?

I think it would help make him feel a part of it and I'd go with it myself...

A friend of mine promised let her son choose and he named the baby Turtle, she felt obligated to uphold her promise...so I was going to warn you Wink but since it's only between reasonable names I think you're safe. Grin

My first reaction the thread title was no way, but as you like both names (and Phillipa is best anyway Smile ) I'd say yes.

I quite often defer decisions to DCs, when I'm dithering and the outcome doesn't actually matter that much. A bit like tossing a coin.

You could always do as SJP did, she let her son James name one of her twin daughters- he choose Marion, but she is known by her middle name LorettaSmile

my oldest 2 love the fact that they chose their sister's name - it was a name we would have never considered but as she was the third girl we were a bit short of ideas and in that post birth haze we decided to make them happy and go for their name. We now love it. I did veto Dd1 wanting to call Dd2 Dizzy after the cement mixer in Bob the Builder....

My dd1 and my mum named my dc2, my mum help choose the name with dd1 the weekend before she died Sad and my dd2 was born 7 weeks later.

I was happy as it was the only thing my mum ever helped give my dc2, and dd1 felt she was involved with the new baby Grin

i would go with it as your ds will probably call the baby by the name he likes anyway whatever you call her Grin

Sounds like you should go with it Smile....and count yourself lucky the boy has taste. DS1 wanted to call DS2 "Loghead" Hmm

Ordinarily, I'd say no way... but the boy has great taste!

Philippa is so much nicer and classier than Alice. Don't know why, but Alice always makes me think of someone who is a bit simple - probably because of the tv portrayal (vicar of dibley etc).

So I'd definitely go with Philippa. Much nicer name Grin

MY son who was 5 at the time, got complete choice over our new baby's name. Luckily we knew he was trying to decide between 2 names we liked alot, otherwise we could have ended up with 'Sniffy' or similar.

Philippa is lovely, although if I am being honest I am not sure I would go with Philippa Sally - for some reason I think there are too many l's! You have another dc, what about giving them the option of the second name if they are old enough?

My brother and sister named me (although my sister fessed up years later that she had deliberately chosen a 'horrible' name as she didn't want to have to share a room with me Grin)!!

I think that Phillipa is the nicest anyway and love Pippa. I can't help but hear 'Alice? Alice? who the f*@k is Alice???'
