name change?

ok without telling you the name...

i struggled to find a name for my son. there was never one name which stood out nor any type of name i felt would be right.

my original brief was for a name that probably wouldn't be shortened to one syllable eg. theo

after loads of searching and thinking and dp's overall useless and negative input, we finally decided on a name.

i was unhappy with it from the start (as the first and last names began with the same letter and i had hated doing this to my daughter but her name was one i loved and would not change) but it seemed the least evil.

i have not once been able to tell someone his name without feeling ashamed and embarrassed and possibly offering some mumblings about how i struggled with his name.

and now he is of an age where i am calling his name more often (....... stop playing with those wires!), i am getting their names mixed up as they are quite similar.

i also feel it diminishes the worth of my daughter's name.

so, should i go for it and change his name?
i've thought of one but dp has ruled it 'too posh' although i don't really see it that way...

To be honest, if he already knows his name I think it's a bit late. If he's more than a year I think you'd have to do it by deed poll and for the rest of his life he'd have to put the name in the "previous names" bit of any form, which might be a bit odd for him.

Could you try to introduce a nickname, maybe based on a middle name if he has one?

he's not yet one year old... i tried the name i liked on him and he turned and smiled just as if i'd said his real name.

Sounds as if your mind is made up - what does DP say?

Ok i look after a child, who was called one name until he was around 18months, the parents then decided they would prefer to use, the shortened version of his name instead. He does respond to both, now at 2.4 but we try to use the changed name although sometimes the other one slips out. So i think yes you could quite easily change it.

His shortened name was completly different to it in full length, e.g richard and dick.

well there's the hassle of actually going ahead with doing it, and getting it done in time to then order him a passport for the holiday we're planning on having in may-ish time...
dp is fine with me changing it but he says that it is up to me to come up with a name which he will then yay or nay. am annoyed v much that he dislikes the name i finally came up with as an alternative :(

and cookie glad to hear it's doable! :)
