How can I find out how common a name is

I've noticed that sometimes posters will say how many children received a particular name in any given year, is there a website that gives the figures. We are planning another dc this year and it might be useful.

The ONS publishes ALL given names in a certain year. There was a link in a recent thread, I'll see if I can find it.

If you are PG and have choosen a name it might be worth asking your MW how popular the name is.

Names can be very regional. Take Evie and Esme for instance, I've seen posters say that the name is very, very popular others say that they've never met one.

Just choose the name you love.

If you look at the page you'll see

2009 Baby Names Statistics Boys
2009 Baby Names Statistics girls etc

Just click on the one you want to look at Smile

Did you find it queenofboak?

If you want to know exactly how many girls with the same name as your DD were registered in 2009, not just the place in the top 100, click on the 6th tab along the bottom of the spreadsheet ('table 6, girls names E&W' then do a 'ctl & f' to search for your daughter's name.

Let us know if you are pleased or otherwise with what you find!

Thanks for that link NotAnother. Does anyone know whether the list of all names (the last tab) counts middle names too? Or does the number of times a specific name is used only refer to first (and therefore used) names?

For example, if a name was used 13 times in 2009, does this mean there are 13 little boys with that name around (rather than some boys having these names as middle names)?

It's only first names.

I can never open that spreadsheet. It just says there's some error or other with it.
