What do you think of the name Skyla?

missmehalia Sun 19-Dec-10 20:59:20

Beautiful (and unusual!)Also like the fact it looks easy to pronounce, little chance of teacher stumbling over it during the register every morning.. smile

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo Sun 19-Dec-10 21:00:40

i think "that's what my dad called one of his foals". sorry.

ShoppingDays Sun 19-Dec-10 21:15:15

Where does it come from? It sounds made up. Prefer just plain Skye.

AllieW Sun 19-Dec-10 21:16:19

Kyla is prettier. Not keen, sorry.

sum04 Sun 19-Dec-10 21:16:49

It's not made up. It's very popular over in the States, as is Summer, which i called my daughter 6 years ago and now it is becoming very popular over in the Uk.

PurpleKate Sun 19-Dec-10 21:50:34

Seems to be a different spelling of the dutch name Schuyler.

christmaseve Sun 19-Dec-10 21:53:12

Not sure, sounds made up and it might be ridiculed, so would say no.

A1980 Sun 19-Dec-10 22:02:15

Are you sure you don't mean Skyler?

Either way I don't really like it and it reminds of this little terror named Skyler

nelly83 Sun 19-Dec-10 22:09:25

I love it. I think it's pretty and feminine. Also love Skye. I think the original spelling is Skyler. But I prefer it spelt the way you have.

PublicHair Sun 19-Dec-10 22:10:35

awful,sorry. sounds made up

upahill Sun 19-Dec-10 22:13:52

Sounds like you haven't finished saying the name.

Also when I saw the title I wanted to say 'All aboard the skylark'

Silly I know.

onimolap Sun 19-Dec-10 22:18:07

I think Summer has been around for a while, owing to Aussie influence; I know one who is 10, and I think the Neighbours' character appeared around then.

Personally, Skyla doesn't do it for me (sounds/looks like a trying-too-hard made-up name). I prefer Skye, or even Kylie.

scottishmummy Sun 19-Dec-10 22:19:05

trying too hard.wasnt it charlotte satc baby name

arizonagirl Mon 20-Dec-10 12:53:57

Love it!! Have just called my beautiful new son Skyler and absolutely adore his name!!! And it is a name that really grows on you. I think Skylar is the usual spelling for a girl. A couple of people have said "oh, like Tyler" which I don't like but I am very happy with our choice. And as many other mumsnetters know it took me a long time to decide - see thread about Beauden (our original choice) Good luck and have fun.

I like Skyla for a girl, it's pretty and feminine. Unfortunatly it is also the name of our cat, sorry

lifeinCrimbo Mon 20-Dec-10 16:52:09

Makes me think of Sylar, from Heroes..
or skylark, which is quite nice sounding.

TheGoddessBlossom Mon 20-Dec-10 16:54:31

I really really like it. smile

mozette Mon 20-Dec-10 17:20:45

rofl @ Sylar from Heroes!

readywithwellies Mon 20-Dec-10 20:08:21

Gillian McKeith's kid is called Skyler. Nuff said.

weimy Mon 20-Dec-10 20:53:29

I like it, I know dogs called skye and Skyla but don't think that should matter if you like it. My two female dogs are called Freya and Darcy lots of people have children with the same name

muminthemiddle Tue 21-Dec-10 14:00:57

I don't like it and I know one. It was the name of a female character from an 80s film but I cannot remember which one.

grendel Tue 21-Dec-10 14:06:33

Yeah, I immediately thought of the cross-eyed baddie from Heroes too.

Don't like it, sorry. Sounds unfinished and made-up.

ShatnersBassoon Tue 21-Dec-10 14:10:18

It makes me think of the babysitter on South Park's horrible boyfriend. Nice.

WhereTheWildThingsWere Tue 21-Dec-10 14:13:18

Skyla is Dutch in origin, though I think the spelling is different, it means 'shelter' or 'shield'.

It is the name of my best friends dd (8), I think it is lovely.
