Mathew?

My DH is Mathew. I knew him as Mav for the first couple of years he was in our group of friends because there was already a Matt. Mav is his "gamer" name, short for Maverick in Top Gun because he always wins on Xbox or whatever they're playing.

So - by the time we started dating I called him Mav and continue to do so, as do most of his friends. We don't know why he's Mathew not Matthew, his mum died 10 yrs ago and we don't dare ask his dad.

The thing is, I hate mis-spelled anything - especially names. One of the reasons I stick to Mav is because Mat/Mathew irritates me. Now we have to choose a name for our baby.

So it's either:

Rupert Mathew Hugh Allen
or
Rupert Maverick Hugh Allen

Which would you choose?

Mathew every time, although the Maverick thing is very cute. Saying that, he might not appreciate in it years to come - being named for a gaming name. Oh, to be brave enough to do it! If you like Maverick enough though, it's got a solid back story that would make an interesting legacy for your DS.

FWiW DH is a Matthew, and constantly gets it misspelled with one T, so it can't be that unusual a spelling of it. I think it's a lovely name.

All four of your names were considered if DD had been a DS!

Sorry, I haven't chosen have I? blush

Personally, Mathew.

But if I was braver, Maverick.

Matthew

happycamel Tue 30-Nov-10 18:40:34

Hi ShoppingDays - but that's the problem. I can't pick Matthew. It has to be Mathew with one "t" because that's DH's name or Maverick.

If I could pick Matthew (proper spelling IMO) it would be fine. I seem to spend half my life correcting people's spelling of DH and can't bear the thought of having to do it for DS as well.

HelenaRose Tue 30-Nov-10 19:34:33

Maverick. Middle names rarely get used, and he's got two 'normal' ones to fall back on if he really doesn't like it.

ItsJustMyOpinion Tue 30-Nov-10 19:39:43

Go for Maverick, but that is just because my dh is Matthew, Matt to me and Matty to his mates, but I don't like the name Matthew, never have done unfortunately

typsical Tue 30-Nov-10 20:18:52

Maverick sounds better before Hugh... I'm not sure why you can't change the spelling? I know a girl who's middle name is Anne, named after her Mum who is Ann...? It'd still be after your DH, you've just changed it a bit to make it more unique to DS?? I love Rupert btw

tammy234 Tue 30-Nov-10 21:10:30

Maverick definately. Cool and with a nice meaning to your family.

Mathew doesn't look right.

lilly13 Tue 30-Nov-10 21:45:21

Matthew! I love the name. It means gift of God in Hebrew.

SausageMonster Tue 30-Nov-10 21:59:41

Matthew

Maverick is utterly ugh!

happycamel Wed 01-Dec-10 18:57:05

But both Lilly and Sausage spelled Matthew with two "t"s, which is rather my point.

Maverick or a miss-spelled Mathew!

SpotSplatterSplash Wed 01-Dec-10 20:06:23

I don't understand why you can't change the spelling to two t's?

Does your DH object?

tammy234 Wed 01-Dec-10 22:18:51

Because OPs dh is a Mathew, not Matthew.

As it is a middle name (with Rupert the first name), it doesn't matter that much as the name is rarely used in my experience. I'd go for Maverick if you want to honour your dh, Mav.

FoxyRevenger Wed 01-Dec-10 22:31:13

I don't see why you can't use two Ts?

It might not be exactly your husband's name but does that really matter?

It's not as if the pronunciation would be different or anything confused

SpotSplatterSplash Thu 02-Dec-10 08:27:03

Agree Foxy, it's obviously been a problem, so why not rectify it and use the two t's spelling?

happycamel Thu 02-Dec-10 11:41:52

I'd love to just change the spelling but DH won't allow that and DH's family would go nuts too. It's either got to be properly after him or not, I guess they see it as an insult that I think one "t" is wrong or miss-spelled and I have enough problems with them already...but that's another thread!

Thanks for all your responses, I did wonder if you'd all just say I was totally mad for even considering Maverick.

strumpet82 Thu 02-Dec-10 11:47:53

IMO, Matthew, spelt without losing the second t.

strumpet82

SpotSplatterSplash Thu 02-Dec-10 11:49:40

Can you just pick a name completely aside from your DH?

One that you both like and agree on.

FairyArmadillo Thu 02-Dec-10 11:51:32

Maverick. The whole name is cool!

BearCrimble Thu 02-Dec-10 12:12:12

Oh bloody hell go for Maverick.

B52s Thu 02-Dec-10 12:48:09

Doesn't mater (see what I did there?) - t'is a middle name. I knew a Mathew too - he was forever correcting people.

SpotSplatterSplash Thu 02-Dec-10 12:55:16

grin

Komondor Thu 02-Dec-10 14:05:39

Maverick.

Nobody uses middle names, so choose a fun/ unusual name.

SausageMonster Thu 02-Dec-10 17:19:03

Maverick =

noun
1. Southwestern U.S. an unbranded calf, cow, or steer, esp. an unbranded calf that is separated from its mother.

2. a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates.

3. ( initial capital letter ) an electro-optically guided U.S. air-to-ground tactical missile for destroying tanks and other hardened targets at ranges up to 15 mi. (24 km).

And you want to call a child that confused
