Hi
Just getting some opinions on the name Fancy. Have you ever met or heard of anybody with this name? Thoughts and honest opinions please.

PlonkerForLifeNotJustChristmas Sat 20-Nov-10 23:11:43

Really?

No, I don't know anyone called Fancy ...

You could use it as a nn for Francis though? or is it Frances for a girl ...?

Goingspare Sat 20-Nov-10 23:13:54

I thought you'd be looking for fancy names, that's a surprise.

I suppose it could be a diminutive for Frances, but can't say I'm keen, and I suspect Fancy Pants would be a hazard.

You've presumably considered Nancy?

Clary Sat 20-Nov-10 23:14:17

Oh, thought you wanted a fancy name....

Like, ya know, Gabriella or Isabella-May or such.

Never met anyoen called Fancy. Not sure it's a name. Bit of a cross to bear surely (what if/when someone fancies her...?)

CarlaC Sat 20-Nov-10 23:15:51

That might be an idea. Tho I'm not one who likes a Sunday name on the birth certificate. I'll ask DH what he thinks.

CarlaC Sat 20-Nov-10 23:16:45

I want something a bit different to Nancy.

BelligerentGhoul Sat 20-Nov-10 23:18:44

Oh dear, no. I came on to suggest names like Christabel and Cassandra!

scurryfunge Sat 20-Nov-10 23:23:56

It means ornamental or decoration. Certainly unusual.

SherbetDibDab Sat 20-Nov-10 23:25:19

It sounds like a slang term for a vagina.

mathanxiety Sat 20-Nov-10 23:45:42

As in 'tickle your fancy'?

HelenaRose Sun 21-Nov-10 08:30:49

Bit too close to Fanny, I'd think...

thereisalightanditnevergoesout Sun 21-Nov-10 09:18:18

We have a Nancy - mostly/often known as 'Fancy Pants' or 'Fondant Fancy'.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout Sun 21-Nov-10 09:19:23

And there is a song that FIL insists on singing which has a line in which goes something like,

'Nancy tickle my fancy' - someone on here knows the rest but I can't remember it now.

MelinaM Sun 21-Nov-10 21:41:11

I thought fancy name toogrin Not keen I'm afraid, Francy/Frankie maybe?!

KenDoddsDadsDog Sun 21-Nov-10 21:42:59

My MIL has a sister called Francie. She saw Jesus in the sunflowers in her garden apparently.

pastaplease Sun 21-Nov-10 21:49:01

Sorry, but I think it would be cruel. I really wouldn't like to go through life being called Fancy.

LynetteScavo Sun 21-Nov-10 21:53:59

Makes me think of fondant fancies.

A bit fancy for my liking.

Hedwig3 Mon 22-Nov-10 10:37:02

Made me laugh out loud - that's all I can say.

MissMashMissMash Mon 22-Nov-10 17:58:30

I think its quite silly. What if she wasn't fancy? I don't think you could even use it as a nickname for Frances, that would be Fran, Franny or Frankie. Nancy is fine but not Fancy.

Ineedsomesleep Mon 22-Nov-10 18:27:02

I suspect you are pregnant and the hormones are affecting your judgement.

KERALA1 Mon 22-Nov-10 18:47:04

Be careful Ineedsomesleep I said that on another baby names thread where OP was in my humble opinion similarly afflicted and I got thoroughly blasted by the hormonal OP for being a wicked sexist grin

KERALA1 Mon 22-Nov-10 18:54:49

WRT this one - if you love it why not have it as a second name? For me it would fail the adult test - may be cute for curly haired tot but your daughter will one day (hopefully) be a strong adult woman possibly lawyer/banker/construction worker whatever and as a Fancy...just dont see it sorry.

Ineedsomesleep Mon 22-Nov-10 18:56:58

Thanks very much for the tip KERALA1. From personal experience anyone who thinks that their brain isn't affected by pregnancy hormones is either a loon the rest of the time too or in denial grin

<sits under table to await the blasting>

Is this a joke?

Frances (nn Fancy)
