Autoimmune disease

Coeliac disease and wheat intolerance

I've been with my husband for over 8 years, married for almost 4.

I have coeliac disease and he's been amazing through my diagnosis and beyond.

I thought he 'got it'.

His dad has just been round and I overheard him try and explain it to him. He told him I was wheat intolerant. I called him on it and we've just had a proper row about it because he genuinely believes coeliac is an intolerance and not an autoimmune disease. I feel like my heart has just sunk a mile downwards. Am I being ridiculous feeling this way?

No you are not being ridiculous at all - but I think you should cut your husband some slack as he has been supportive overall.

I have it and to be brutally honest most people just don't get it at all.

I have given up trying to explain it to waiters.

I know it is frustrating - I find gluten dude worth reading when the whole thing gets me down.

Most people think it is an allergy.

Most people just don't get it.

I still have had family members and friends bring me food with gluten in it. I am sure they don't mean to cause me harm but I think it is a disease where you have to be careful all the time around food and if you husband gets it then that is a major support.

Two dc with coeliac here. Some people don't get the seriousness of it and look at me like I'm crazy when I suggest a crumb could make them very very sick.

If he's been supportive overall maybe he thought it was the easiest way he could get it through to his dad.
