Advice for novice quilter

Now that I'm ungainfully unemployed I'm thinking of ways to occupy all this free time I have till find something else. One idea was to make DS a memory quilt for cuddling up in when he's reading/watching TV (I had something like this).

Basically I'm thinking of using odds and ends of some of the clothes he's grown out of (the less stained ones) and badges from places we've been etc. But how do I go about it? At the mo I'm using an old cot sheet as the prospective backing? Does that make sense?

All advice gratefully received - I so don't do arty/crafty things and am completely guessing my way into this.

Sorry, this is just more of a bump as I'm hoping that someone will give you some advice as I've had the same idea myself and don't know where to start, I'm also not so good with sewing like this, I've never used a sewing machine, but I'd give it a go. So I'm sure someone out there could help!
