DD will be 4 next month. She is allergic to dairy products so I make her birthday cakes. All well and good but this year she has decided she wants an Angelina Ballerina cake!

HELP!!!

How can I achieve this? I really don't want to let her down as her brother and sister get shop bought cakes with all manner of cartoon characters (from M&S )

A shop near me rents cake tins with all sorts of childrens characters on, dora the explorer etc, not sure about angelina. you would then have to decorate it (I contemplated this but it seemed a bit hard, but then I don't have a child with a dairy allergy). There may be one near you? The decorating stuff you can buy I think and its all made of sugar paste.

There are companies that will turn photos inot sugar paste decorations for you which you could put on top of a normal cake. I will see if I can find a link.

gillian76 - look in the local paper to see if someone near you makes birthday cakes. If you are in SE London/Kent my mate is a dab hand at cakes and made and Angelina one last week!

We are up near Glasgow, I'm afraid! I would need to find someone I trust to make a cake for us. Some people don't realise the implications and ask "can she have a little bit?" "can she have white chocolate if not milk chocolate?". Have had a few bad experiences

Not sure if there would be copyright implications with the caketoppers thing? WIll check out your other link, jane

I know I knwo

Can you get an angelina ballerina doll

then just make a cake in a pudding dish .. and shove the doll through the middle so you see its body and head and make the pudding shaped cake like a ballerina's skirt

I wonder if with a bit of practise, I could manage the second cake (Cakes 4 Fun)?

toys here

or pick some small toys and make a round cake and place them around .. maybe the cake could look like a stage?

Ive seen those sort of cakes in a local bakers twiglett. Some of them look more like those loo roll holders!

Could you just put any sort of angelina figure on a cake?

or yellow icing with holes so it looks like a wedge of cheese [girn]

Oh that's a good idea! Then she could keep the toys after the birthday too

angelina ballerina themed party wear .. although a bit pricey

How about making a round basic cake - iced with fondant if that is okay for her then a Angelina soft toy just sitting on top? Simple and if you make the cake you know what is in it. It must be difficult to trust someone like you say if they don't realise the importance of allergies.

I think the one on the 2nd cake would be quite simple .. just make it out of coloured fondant icing (you can icing pens from sainsbury's)

one of my favourite cake websites to browse is here

they have glitter flakes and little icing flowers .. they have ballerinas (but not angelina) .. is it ballet or specifically angelina?

they do mail order

Yes, I think I will give it a try and resort to buying figures if it doesn't work out!

Don't use the icing in a tube stuff (big tubes) as it has a milk product in it. Double check first!

Report
Gillian76 · 07/08/2005 18:21

Oh no! Think we have used the little tubes before maybe.

The thing is, she won't actually eat the cake. She just likes the idea of it! I think she is frightened that it will make her sick

Each year I lovingly make her a cake, only for her to have a nibble of the icing and then leave it! I keep thinking "she might eat it this year..."

I made DD a teletubbie cake by tracing a teletubbie, making a big cake & cutting the shape out& then made the icing using royal icing with natural yellow colour - I think you can buy natural pink colour too ?

You could always trace an Angelina Ballerina shape from a comic/annual & use coloured icing to fill it in ?

Might be best to make pink icing & then put Angelina on top as suggested ?

Not realy much help but where i work we make cakes using olive oil insted of butter, they taste yummy, you wouldnt think they had olive oil in them. Tracing a picture on to the cake is a very good idea.

I have been using Pure sunflower margarine in place of butter. Never thought of olive oil. What quantity would I use to replace, say, 6-8oz of butter?

Use the same amount as you would butter.
