Are there any good websites that explain how to do paint effects on furniture?

Yes, I've googled but I'm only coming up with companies that do it for you rather than How To sites. I'm not looking for anything really fancy, just how to achieve a distressed, shabby look. Is it more complicated than painting one colour over another and then rubbing back areas to reveal the colour underneath? I seem to remember there was wax and all sorts involved.

Any tips gratefully received

From memory there are a couple of techniques.
1 - sand down said furniture
2 - appply base colour (the one you want to show through)
3 - rub wax (candle is fine) to areas that are raised and edges.
4 - paint top colour (leave to dry)
5 - gently sand down (less gently on waxed areas) till you get finish you are after
6 - clear varnish.

or

You can do a base coat in one colour then get a cloth and cover with furniture wax and rub off till you get desired effect. (this is trickier and more 'murky' looking)

my advice would be to pick up a QUID table from charity/junk shop and practice first.
