Another knitting question (sorry!) What Wool For A Scarf?

Hi, it's me - again!

I have got the knitting sorted out now (the tension I mean) and am getting better with each row on my practise bit so am wondering what to actually make first.

I decided on a scarf - it is straight and easy! So not much can go wrong.

Am left wondering now though - what wool? Do I use DK, 4Ply, Chunky...?

I would like to do it on 3 or 4mm needles so that it is a nice tight stitch and it will be for my 5yr old DS so not too long/fat would be best.

Any ideas/comments? Thanks

Definitely stick to DK as 4ply comes out too thin for a scarf. Tbh I don't think I have ever found a use for 4 ply - it would have to be something fine and lacy probably.

I would use a variagated coloured wool if you have one - hides the mistakes and the dodgy tension well.

If you chose chunky wool you will need slightly bigger needles but it will knit up that much quicker. They don't have to be that much bigger - say a 5 or 6mm for some wools.

Do you have a good wool shop locally where you can go and ask questions? Sometimes you need to see things in the flesh, so to speak.

Yes, there is a great wool shop in my village - I think I will ask their opinion too.

Thanks for your advice re: fashion wool - some of that looks like a nightmare to use!

I might go for chunky because DS can't wait for a scarf!

We have a good local wool shop to. I think we are both very lucky - they seem few and far between these days. Ours is very helpful - I took my mother-in-law there after Christmas as she wanted to knit a friend a prayer shawl. She is a novice too and they were very helpful with amounts and needles. Hope it works out for you.
