Tapestry tent stitch

I'm having a go at tapestry doing this cushion
The instructions are to do it in tent stitch which I have worked out how to do for rows all of the same colour but I'm not sure how to do it for this sort of pattern with a lot of small colour patches . The instructions just say to start in the middle and do a patch of the pattern .
Is there a technique for this? Tia

Tent stitch is just half a cross. Bottom left to top right. Is the canvas pre-printed with the colours? if so, it's just colouring in. You don't need to do it row by row. You could start with the red and stitch the elephant, then the white pattern bit, then the blue surround - whatever you like.

Sorry another question- on the elephant for example the dots are one stitch - would you carry the wool behind from one to the other do you think?

Yes. You can work vertically or horizontally.
