Changing the width of a V Stitch blanket? Help

Hi. I've been given a half made V Stitch blanket (crochet) and asked if I can shorten the width and finish it. Obviously finishing it isn't a problem, but I have no idea about shortening it. Can I just cut the yarn a few stitches on from where I want it to end and slip stitch to tie the row off? Will that ruin it? And if not, so I start at the top or bottom?

Please help! So much work has gone into this already, and the person who started it is unable to finish it due to illness so I really don't want to mess it up.
