Wedding dress alteration help!

I've bought a wedding dress online and want to change the back from zip to a corset style. I've been into a dry cleaners who will do it for me but I need to supply the material, which is fine but I have no idea of where to get it from or how much I would need.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would be really appreciative!

I'm not a dressmaker but a friend did something similar on a bridesmaid dress for my SIL.

I'm assuming that you need fabric for the underlay under the corset lacing (this stops your skin showing through the corset back) and also to create the loops and the lacing of the corset. If that is the case I would go to John Lewis and ask in the haberdashery department or (even better) go to a fabric shop and ask advice from the sales assistant, who will hopefully be experienced enough to help. You'll need to get a close match in both colour and weight of fabric so you would probably need to take your dress with you.

My friend did the alterations using just the fabric from the wide belt that came with the dress but she was amazingly skilled. Hopefully the sales person can advise you how much fabric you need to buy.

I'd head to Soho (Berwick Street) and ask in one of the fabric shops!

If you haven't already sorted this out then the thing to do is to but a kit from Bridal Buttons - you get the loops on a strip of fabric, and a modesty panel to the size you need, it's custom made and can be colour matched to what you need.
