Making a crochet rug

Has anyone crocheted a rug using ribbon t shirt yarn? I really want to make a small rug for dd's room, then possibly some others. I want it to be quite thick and heavy so it sits nicely on the floor so thought ribbon yarn would work well for this. Can anyone advise on a pattern or how to make a start? Thanks.
