Dyeing acrylic

I have just bought an acrylic cricket v neck, as DS needs to dress up as a WWII evacuee for school. It was 50p so I am hoping to dye it a more sombre colour than bright white as it is not destined to go on the cricket pitch !. However, in Hobbycraft, all the dyes very clearly said they wouldn't work on acrylics, so does anyone have any clever suggestions?

Acrylic is hot dyed, before garment production. You'd have to try a stove top boil but it is likely to make the jumper misshapen.
Wouldn't a grey v neck have been cheaper and less hassle?

A new grey v neck, which is not part of our uniform and won't get used again, is definitely going to cost more than 50p!
I want to give it a try, though your response is not making it sound very realistic. Oh well.

I think the dye will cost you more than one of these:

sorry not to be more optimistic.

I don't mind shelling out for dye, because I would be doing another jumper at the same time, which also cost 50p, and is for my friend's DS for the same trip. Now I finally tracked something down, I am reluctant to give up!

then you'll need some of this, and good luck!.
Do post the before and after pictures when you've finished.
