Sewing machine for a total beginner

Much to my surprise, I find I enjoy making fancy dress for Halloween, World Book Day, etc. I've got by so far with a tiny hot glue gun and a needle and thread, but I want to get more ambitious.
Does anyone have recommendations for a small sewing machine, sturdy but nothing fancy? Up to £100 for a really good one, but ideally more like £50-70.
