Dye lot, variegated yarn, help!

A relative of mine died recently, leaving a half-knitted jumper for my DD. I found someone to finish it for me but it looks like we don't have enough wool. (I'm SURE my relative bought enough but we can't find it anywhere.) I'm told that because it is a variegated yarn the dye lot should not matter so much, so I'm hoping we can get away with ordering more. I've found the wool online and the website offers two different dye lots, both different from the one I have. Should I get some of each and see which one looks closer or just pick one? Would the dye lot that is closer in number to the one I have be more likely to match? How terrible will it look with different dye lots?

Thank you very much for any information! I know nothing about this stuff.

I'm sorry to hear about your relative Flowers

I don't think it matters too much with dye lots if it is variegated because there are lots of colours anyway. I would just order any.

It doesn't make a difference how close the number is though as each dye lot is separate.

Also - I would be careful about someone else taking over the jumper because their tension might be different. Get them to knit a gauge swatch and compare with the part already done. (They probably already know this)

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know about the tension so that is helpful!
