Check out VeryPink.com. There are loads of tutorials from the basics up, with video tutorials for specific patterns so you get some help with the tricker bits. My advice would be buy yourself some beautiful super chunky wool yarn (avoid anything fuzzy, trickier for first timers) and knit yourself a simple gather stitch scarf (Google first scarf or look on ravelry). I started with Erika Knight Maxi Wool. 2 Hanks should be enough for a simple scarf ( cast on about 15 stitches). I found having a beautiful yarn really motivated me, and as it was thick wool on large needles (try 9mm) it went fast! I liked straight needles to begin with, in birch wood.

Good luck!

If you know anybody who knits, it's much easier to learn by watching their hands then doing it and getting them to correct you rather than from books or videos.

Start with a scarf or baby blanket, nothing too ambitious as you'll be really slow at first!

I did this over summer :)

I made squares and they were made into a blanket.

This autumn I've made a chunky scarf for dd, an infinity scarf for me and a teddy for my friend who is pregnant.

Knitting for dummies is a great book

I learnt when younger but had forgotten it all, and am now well into the swing of things again

Ok I'm not following patterns as such but I'm making great scarves with various knit/pearl combos

Knitting help is a really good online resource of videos to show you how, and they have an app too.

They show the stitches done slowly, explain really well and have them properly clear in close-up. Well worth looking at...
