Knitting help with baby socks please

I am knitting some baby socks and have mastered the dpns. I am about to start the heel and I am to redistribute the stitches on the 3 needles, cut off the existing yarn and rejoin the yarn to the new first stitch. I'm not entirely sure how to do this as I have no yarn to join it to but to be honest I think I am being a bit thick. I would be very grateful for some help.

you don't join it to any other yarn really

you just knit with it

leave a long tail and just knit with the new yarn. after a few stitches (when it feels quite taut) knot it at the back (thats what I do, its not massively elegant but it works )

OK, so I just strand it over the needle and knit as normal even though not secured to anything? When you say knot it at the back, do you mean just put a knot in the single strand you have at the back sort of like you would put at the end of a piece of sewing thread? Although, you want the knot very close to the knitting I assume?
I am about to 'turn' my knitting so stand by for more obvious questions!

yeah that sounds about right

I would actually normally knot at the end of the circular row, so a vertical knot, thinking on it

bloody well done for learning to knit on dpns before learning to join yarn, btw. the fact that you can't join yarn yet suggests you are quite new at knitting? am duly impressed.

Thanks very much! Do you know what? I'm not that new to knitting and can do some trickyish things but normally ask my mum to assist with things like picking up stitches for neckbands etc. She's on holiday for 4 weeks so I am a bit stuck. I have big holes in my knowledge for the basics. I can join yarn at the end of a row when I need a new ball but was having a mental block about rejoining. Also, I'm a bit of a perfectionist and like to know that I'm doing things absolutely right - too sad.

i do hate dpns. dunno why

its ok now cos i use bamboo/birch but cannot be doing with metal, the stitches keep sliding off...
