Can anyone tell me where to start with knitting a chunky blanket? Where should I buy the wool from? What type? Do I need a pattern?

No idea, can you join Ravelry if you haven't already (is free).
You can search by project type (blanket) and wool type (chunky) and whether or not a pattern is free or paid.
I would start there, I hope you find something you like
