No idea Laurie but I reckon £15 an hour minimum plus thread and whatever else may be needed - like 3mm slightly stretchy stay tape.

Have you tried sproutpatterns.com? You can choose any fabric from //www.spoonflower.com and choose the pattern at Sprout Patterns. They've even got a white glove sewing service, so you can have the dress of your dreams all sewn up for you!

It really depends on a few things, where you live for example.

Dressmakers also have to cost in time for advice on fabric/style, cutting out, garment fittings & adjustments etc etc, so even the simplest dress will probably take more time than you expect. Also if you don't have a standard body shape/size, they will have to cut/adjust your pattern to make it fit you, sometimes it can be easier to make a pattern from scratch to fit you, than to make several big pattern adjustments, which can be very time consuming.

So its really difficult to guess a price based on the info you give, most dressmakers worth their salt, will invite you along for a chat & a look at what you want & to gauge any needed pattern adjustments, plus how fussy you are likely to be & give you a quote from there

sproutpatterns.com/white_glove_service charge different amounts to sew your garment for you depending on the style. For example the Colette Patterns Moneta dress is very popular because you can choose what sleeves you have and it's very flattering sproutpatterns.com/colette-patterns/moneta-dress costs $30 (£22.86 at today's exchange rate) to have it sewn for you in addition to the cost of the dress fabric. There is no charge for a pattern because the dress is printed directly on the fabric just like Clothkits. If you google Moneta dress you'll see that they are what everyone is wearing!

Another dress in this price bracket for being sewn is the Appleton, which goes up to a size 28! sproutpatterns.com/cashmerette/appleton-dress

The benefits of this white glove sewing service is that for essentially £22.86 (plus the cost of your dress project) you can go to //www.spoonflower.com and choose whatever fabric takes your fancy, then go to www.sprout patterns and add that fabric to the dress style of your choice and get someone to sew it for you! You can also go to sproutpatterns.com/projects?utf8=%E2%9C%93&pattern%5Bid%5D=60&commit=Go and choose a curated project for Moneta or Appleton

Or you can just go to sproutpatterns.com/projects and see the curated clothes, select your size and the white glove sewing service. The one in the photo is mine from there, but when I next order one I'll go for the 3/4 length sleeve option. It's certainly a new way of shopping and thinking about clothes isn't it! Smile

Those links look good for anyone who finds off the peg clothing fit them well, but I'm guessing if the OP is asking about a dressmaker, off the peg doesn't work for them.

I paid a professional dressmaker £80 to make my registry office wedding dress. (five years ago)

It was a lined, sleeveIess, fitted, knee length shift dress -I provided the material and had two fittings.

It fitted like a glove and was well worth the money.

I paid £80 for a dress made by a dressmaker. A sort of full skirt with a shift top, 50s style Audrey Hepburn type thing, but she drafter her own pattern so probably cost more.
