I need to buy some beige/brown or beige/black striped thick(ish) jersey online- i have no idea where to start!

I have someone who can make this dress for me but I need to get hold of the fabric. Any pointers would be very welcome Smile

Thanks djini- the beige/taupe is close. Have you ordered from them before?

eBay is your friend. just search striped jersey. the fabric on the model looks fairly lightweight.

lightweight because of the drape on the peplum in particular - and on the skirt too.

Ah, thanks Catherine- just the kind of thing I have no idea about! Do you think this will do?

Hard to say, I would go for it but then I have got a fabric stash Grin. Have you got a pattern and if so what does that specify fabric wise?

Just one thing on that listing, where they say that they try to cut in one continuous length .... Not good enough, they must cut in one continuous length. Otherwise you might end up with a piece that you can't get a section of your skirt out of. They could send you three separate metres per their listing, that would be truly rubbish.

No, no pattern- just a very confident dressmaker Grin

Good spot on the 'try to' front- I will message them, as unfortunately I can't find the right colour fabric anywhere else.

Do you think it is the right weight? Is 170-200gsm paper thin?

Not sure tethersend I struggle with GSM. I so know that 400gsm canvas is fairly heavy. I have a piece of medium weight jersey I can weigh for you tomorrow. Smile. Will check the width too.

Thanks Catherine- you're a star.

Last question, I promise- how many metres do you think I should get?

I think about 4m for matching your fabric - look at this pattern as a guide (I would imagine C to be fairly similar in fabric requirement, a bit less in your skirt and a bit more in your bodice). Can you ask your dressmaker just to make sure?

I can't find the length of jersey I was thinking of weighing but found this online. 170gsm is 7oz ish and 200gsm 8oz which the chart says is heavy t shirt weight. Is that the sort of weight you were thinking of?

Typical fabric weights and uses

Lightweight fabrics are suitable for underwear and summer items such as dresses and shirts. A lightweight t-shirt fabric will be about 5.3 oz, a standard weight 5.5 oz and a heavier t-shirt 6-7 oz.
Fabrics classed as ‘upholstery’ fabrics are heavyweight and are known to be stronger than other textile materials. They are suitable for cushion and furniture coverings and can be used for curtains but should not to be used for anything requiring intricate effects such as gathering because the fabric will be too thick and stiff. Thin curtains fabric has a GSM of around 140 but the heavier the material is, the denser it will be which means it will block out more light and insulate the room better.
Wool is a luxury fibre often used for tailoring, 3 season wool which is suitable for autumn/ winter and spring weighs about 10- 12oz. For very cold countries you can get heavier winter wool which can weigh as heavy as 600 GSM. Wool can also be woven specially to make it into a much cooler, lighter fabric for hotter countries.

Must add that I meant 4m of 60" wide per your link.

Really appreciate your help Smile

Some fabric I bought on eBay arrived today tethersend - very disappointing Sad. You just never know do you without a sample.

I will use it to test a new pattern I have, then if I don't like it it doesn't matter as much.

Good advice- I ordered a couple of samples from eBay- one arrived this morning and it's so thin it's bloody transparent! Glad I didn't order the full 4m.

The search continues...
