A fascinating thread about irons
(8 Posts)Any sewers here have strong feelings on the best iron? I need something with multiple heat settings, a reasonably long cord, a precise point and that WON'T leak. My current crappy iron is making pressing seams out a total nightmare and it leaks all over the fabric .
Of course I might use it for ironing clothes at some point too but probably not often
I have strong feelings on irons. You won't be interested in my opinion though
clover does a mini iron thing precisely for pressing seams apart.
I have a Tefal for normal ironing.
Cunny I am interested, promise! I generally feel they are tools of oppression but in sewing they do seem necessary. Alas.
Thanks Zing! I'll look into that
Detest ironing, absolutely loathe it. I took up sewing just over a year ago. I was most dismayed to discover that ironing was a necessary evil that goes hand in hand with making pretty things
I've got a clover mini iron and its Fab for seams on tiny items. I bought it for toy making when I had an obsession with Tilda. I'm not sure it would be any good for large items but then there are different attachments so you may find one that's suitable. Or what about a travel iron. Bigger then a craft iron but compact so might have more of a presission point then a larger iron.
I used to work in various sewing jobs (this was years ago), the best irons I used were really heavy steam generated ones with a massive tanks that never leaked. The weight made them fantastic for ironing in seams and folds etc. I have no idea what make they were though but you could google. Not sure how cheap they were either, but I still like a really heavy iron.
Thanks all! I think I might get a Clover mini one and then look for a good heavy steamy one for bigger projects.
I hate ironing as a rule it's such a source of dismay that there's so much of it in sewing!! I did try a travel iron but it was so flimsy.
