How do I shorten a zip? Please help!

DD wants to dress up as Dorothy, so I'm planning to cut up this old school dress into a more pinafore type thing. But I'd want to cut the top bit off (where the black lines are) - but if I do that the zip pull would just come off the top I think?

Is there any way I can sew it so the zip stays on? I could just safety pin it I guess but not practical if she needs to change for PE etc.

I mean the zip pull would come off the top when she pulls the zip up.

You need to run the zip down then see around the plastic of the zip on both sides at the level you want it to stop. Then cut off above that. Make sure you have enough thread around to stop the zip coming over the top.

Sew around, not see!

Oh ok so just keep sewing round the same bit?

Yep, where you want the top of the zip to be.the thread should act as a new 'stop'
