Hello ladies

I have been hanging around here for a while now as very interested in getting into some craft activities and just now have won anauction for a sewing machine. Think I got a bargin as cheaper than the John Lewis little ones or even the lidl one but it's a brother ls 2725.

Anywho an suggestions for first projects, how to develop my machining skills as I haven't used one since very young.

I have my eye on making sil a bag for her birthday in nov plus lots of Xmas gifts but all suggests welcome.

Tia

Ooooo! Lavender bags! You can always use them in drawers or as little gifts.
Cushions?
Bag to put supermarket carriers in - tube with elastic both ends - put the bags in the top and pull out at the bottom.
I like doing machine patchwork. 6inch squares with a half inch seam allowance. Made curtains like this. What fun!

I'm very envy

I'm desperate for a sewing machine but other more practical demands on our finances mean I have to wait.

On my list of things to make when I get one is
Lavender bags
Cushions
Curtains
Some clothes for DD's barbie. I have knitted her a few bits on tiny needles but I could make more interesting things with a sewing machine
An A line skirt for me
A peg bag
Some Christmas decorations
New stockings for the DC. 3 have the same and they look fab hanging on the fireplace. They've had them for a few years now and I have since had DC4 and would like them all to match blush
One of those draught excluder sausage things

I'm off now to convince myself that a new hob really is more important than a sewing machine grin

Thanks buck, it was really cheap and tbh not something I should have bought either but have justified it by the savings I will make blush

Some more fab ideas thanks

Good thinking LBAMA! grin

We're due some extra money at the end of Oct so I've not that long to wait really.

Keep posting on here with what you make and any tips etc. Have you had a machine before?

Oooo, I'm getting a sewing machine for Christmas. I haven't used one since I was at school (unsuccessfully!!), but I've always wanted to learn how to use one. Let us know how you get on!!!

LoveBeingAMummyAgain Sun 25-Sep-11 23:34:47

Will do. Haven't used one since I was very young and hen nothing serious so it's ny first grown up machine grin

Just need some material now. Might practise on some of dd's old clothes rather than paying out for material that I will probably ruin.

grin at grown up sewing machine.

Practicing on old clothes sounds like a good idea. What is your 1st project going to be?

When I was young my aunt used to make the majority of her own clothes. I used to be in awe of her, with her patterns and special sewing chalk, a little pale green triangular waxy thing. I used to think 'I'm going to do that when I'm grown up' smile

I've just found out that Aldi has mini sewing machines for £15! DP is going to call in there after work and see if they have any left <fingers crossed>

Hopefully that will satisfy my burning desire to sew something!

Buck that's great hope he finds one.

Gonna try sewing in straight lines first grin. Might even unpick and resew a few things, not sure yet but had loads of great ideas. Christmas is going to be fun!

Ooo ooo gonna share a secret! I go to furnishing shops where they have those big curtain material swatch books and ask for any old ones! Picked up 10 Nina Campbell and Osbourne and Little ones last week! Bloomin perfect for cushions or patchwork!!!!
Am i your new best friend OR WHAT!!! Shhhh dont tell anyone!

LoveBeingAMummyAgain Mon 26-Sep-11 09:56:10

Only got a few mins to play but was able to thread and even messed about with some material. Think I have fallen in love!

I am a total addict of the Mollie Makes magazine, and they have really nice (and very simple) patterns in for sewing machines (and lots of hand stuff too). I have recently got my first machine too, so their really simple stiff is great for me to practice on.
