Hi, have decided I'd like to learn to crochet, and have looked at other threads suggesting watching Youtube demos. However, I can't seem to find any British ones, and it's been mentioned that British and US stitches are slightly different. Could anyone please link me to some beginner tutorials from the UK please? Or doesn't it really matter for a complete novice? Many thanks in advance.

It doesn't really matter, the stitches are the same, and actually the terminology is the same it's just they refer to slightly different things. If you do a quick google on us vs uk crochet terminology you'll find lots of sites give a conversion table. It won't affect you learning to crochet as long as you are aware of the difference.

What UK call a double crochet, US call a single
What UK call a treble, US call a double

That's essentially the difference. It doesn't really matter what you call it though, as the pp said the technique is the same, so once you know how to do it you'll be able to work with UK and US patterns - as long as you know which one you're looking at!

Good luck, hope you enjoy crochet, I love it. Sometimes it takes a bit of getting your head round, but once it clicks, you're away,. You'll be a pro before you know it.

thanks for all your advice. Have managed to master the (US) chain, single crochet and double crochet and so far my granny square has grown to about 10 inches across. Feel like I'm getting the hang of it now! It's quite addictive though isn't it? Grin

What sort of things can you make when you crochet?
