Being a bit nosey really. Just started sewing and curious what other people sew :)

I'm a novice really, but in the past year or so (when I got my beloved sewing machine) I've done countless cushions, duvet covers and simple kids' bags, and more daringly have also re-covered an armchair, made a roman blind and recently made a 'taggy' blanket for a friend's baby. :)

Ooooh I get my machine tomorrow. Bought my first bit of fabric today!! It's amazing what excites me these days!! Making DD a tutu in a frantic bid to make her a bit more girly and trying to hand sew a pin cushion out of old tops lol!

I'm not surprised you're excited to get a new machine , and don't get me started on fabrics!.. The world is your oyster when you can sew, but then i am slightly obsessed - always have been.. An obsession that makes you happy and saves money is a good good thing!

Once you get into it, you'll be excited by all sorts! I bought myself a sewing box to keep all my crap stuff in, and loved sorting it and getting all things in the right places.

Good luck with the tutu - that's ambitious!! :)

I'm trying to figure out sewing so I can make DD some clothes!! Love all the next and Boden clothes but can't justify the money on toddler outfits!!
I want a sewing box!! Must get more bits that I can put in it though first!

wow dizzyday - I have just made a paper-pieced Russian doll after coming across yours on google!

Another blogger had seen your russian dolls on flikr & made up her own pattern, which she then posted! (here)

It was my first attempt at foundation piecing, bit fiddly but a good way to use scraps!

sorry OP for hijacking!

There are lots of great free tutorials for girls clothes out there! Try the Oliver & S website, or google girls dress/skirt/clothes I prefer to search in images as you can see at a glance if you like the lokk of a project or not.

I also buy SEW HIP each month, all sorts of projects most are beginner friendsly.

I used to make a lot of my three daughters clothes. Now I make clothes for my 2 and a half year old granddaughter. However, I'm retired and I also now make handbags, totes etc, which I fairly successfully sell at markets, craft fairs, etc. I love the idea of actually making some money from something I love doing.

For the home - I make all my own curtains,cushion covers, table covers, etc, and for the one daughter left at home, I'll be making a dress for her best friend's wedding next year. Fabric, pattern, etc all bought, but won't start till early next year, as wedding is in May.

Cushion covers, tea towels, curtains, very rarely, clothes.

My machine mostly gets used for making coats for my whippet and hammocks for my rats

My eventual aim is craft fairs!! In my head I have a image of being the kind of mum who makes things and bakes fantastic cakes... The reality is frazzled and shop bought but I will get there!!!

Ooer - i can sew anything, and have made ripstop 12 ft high 12 pointed inflatable stars for nightclubs, to Mens suits, to ladies silk lined shift dresses (commissions) but don't ever ever ask me to bake a cake!..

I bow to anyone that can cook!

Errr the thread keeps snapping I think. Makes holes in fabric but no actual sewing and it doesn't have a manual!! Grrrr

If the bottom thread is breaking is your bobbin case threaded properly?, if its the top thread it will be the tension..

What jellykat says - try turning the lower bobbin the other way or taking the thread out and threading it the other direction.

GetOutMyPub - you have it the wrong way round - I used HER pattern to make my little quilt!

But I did make a Russian Doll softie from my own pattern.

I do LOVE paper piecing though and you should check out SewHooked for free patterns.

sorry to butt in but ive just started using a sewing machine i bought second hand for £10 last year. ive not sewn since i was in school 20 years ago and i must admit im now addicted. i have a new baby and a toddler (both girls) and would love to start making things for them. will someone tell me how to make a "taggy" blanket. i have a rough idea but need some inspiration. i would say my skill is basic at the moment but hope to eventually make basic curtains for the little ones bedrooms as i love curtains.!!!!

If i was you i'd applique a few contrasting bits on top of the blanket pieces to add more interest, before you stitch it all together.. HTH

I added a crinkly thing in the middle (I used an A4 pocket folder thingy) and added a couple of buttons and crinkly things on one side of it too for fun too. Was really pleased with the end effect, even if it doesn't look quite as professional as the one jellykat has linked to :o
