Cake Makers?

Does anyone on this board make cakes (both shaped and decorated intricately)? I am planning to try out some recipes but could do with finding like minded people for when it all goes wrong?!

I'm very good at making disasterous cakes but know from past mistakes that there are quite a few people out there who know much more than me. The Recipes topic under Feed the World is quite a useful place to post.

I am a very amateur cake maker and got loads of very helpful replies when I've posted in the past in the "Food" topic from much more experienced cake makers. (pic of the Hungry Caterpillar cake still on my profile I think, made after much advice from Mumsnetters!).

Thank you both :) I wasn't sure if food was too general for it, but I shall go over then when I am stuck :)

I love your caterpillar cake Wigeon! Did you have a specific thread with help on for this? Just wondering if I would be up to this challenge with a thread to help me tell me what to do!

Thank you . I really am a complete fancy cake amateur, so if I can do it, you can too! The thread is here. It doesn't exactly have full instructions but gives you an idea of what I did. A bundt tin was essential. Feel free to ask any questions about it if you want - I am usually on the receiving end of cake-decorating advice, so it would be nice to be on the giving end! Smile.

Oh, just remembered I did actually post instructions - half way down this thread.

Thank you! Am getting ahead of myself as DS's birthday isn't until January but I was so disappointed with the one I did this year, that I want to get ideas ready and practises in! No doubt I'll be in touch nearer the time when I'm in a panic!
Thanks for the links.

Wigeon, your cake is fantasic. I did a lazy version of the hungry caterpillar just using cupcakes and then a larger cake for it's head. Yours puts it to shame.

I also LOVE baking so if you fancy swapping tips and ideas anytime just give me a shout.

Thank you chirpchirp! I only manage a fancy cake once a year (and did that one with a friend) for the birthday party we have each year for the children of my NCT antenatal class which I did when pregnant with my now 3 year old. The rest of the time it's flapjacks / banana cake / brownies etc etc! Smile.

I'm sure your cupcake hungry caterpillar looked fantastic - I did see a few done like that when I was googling for ideas and they looked great. DD's 4th birthday is next June - any ideas for next year's cake?! Grin
