I want to start quilting. Would this quilt frame on ebay be appropriarte or is it to big for a beginner?

I think that that is fairly large. I perhaps would start by handquilting a pillow case or something similar with a simple hoop ring. That would be a fairly large project and if you aren't sure you'll love it, it may be quite daunting.

Yes, it really would be a little too big to start with... you need a small frame about 17" x 17" which you would be able to manipulate quite easily. The frame which you are looking at would often be used by a group of quilters rather than someone working on their own... besides it will take up loads of space!

thank you both for the input. It looks like a cheap deal for someone.

My dad helped me to make one like my granny used to use. Just 4 long pieces of wood with holes drilled through at an angle all the way along and a clamp at each corner. You tack the quilt to the frame through the holes, adjust the clamps to make sure it's tight and balance it on chairs at each corner. Then you start quilting at the bottom and take out the tacking as you go along so that you can roll the completed quilt up around the bottom piece of wood to reach the middle. I've only used it for hand quilting, but I'd imagine it would work for machine quilting too if you could get the frame balanced at the right height for the machine.
