where can I learn how to sew?

I cannot even sew a button and save it all up for my mom to do when she visits.

I asked inat my local sewing supplies shop, and I think she thought I was daft (i have a vague notion of making my own cushions). The implication being that they sell things to people whi can already sew! Well, she's missing a trick to get new customers then cos I bet lots of folk don;t know howto sew and once they can, they would buy from her!

I took an adult ed class in sewing. I decided to go as Mum died and she used to do things for me so I thought I ought to learn. I did know how to do some thing, like sew a button, but she could do lots of things and I wanted to know how to use a sewing machine and little things like that. I actually made a pair of trousers at the class I've never worn them though but the course was great, I learned enough to allow me to take up curtains, adjust clothes a little- I'm not great but better than a lot of people my age

Well, you can definately start by asking your mum to show you. Of course you can sew a button, you just haven't tried yet.

As well as asking your mum to show you, you can borrow books from the library and use the internet. There are lots and lots of websites, blogs, tutorials, youtube clips etc showing you how to do basic sewing stuff.

Start by doing a google search. See where it takes you.

Is there a sewing machine shop near you? They often run classes or one-to-one sessions, or if they don't they tend to know where you can do them.

Where in the country do you live? I know that at my shop we offer basic sewing lessons and I'm sure there are lots of other craft cafes around?

I have managed to learn to cast on and off for knitting from YouTube, there are some fab things on there and you can replay as often as you like!

oh yes, knitting via youtube here too! So far I only have a very scarf that looks very sorry for itself but I'm dead proud of it!

Knittings impossible, but sewings easy (even DH can both hand sew and use both my ordinary and overlocker machine if he has to - he can thread the overlocker too, which is a real art)
if you are a total beginner go to your local library or amazon and have a good browse at the children's as well as the adults books, but most of all don't be afraid to try. Make something simple by hand or machine, make it out of cotton fabric and don't choose anything too small and fiddly.
Barbie clothes are an absolute no as is anything made of slippery acrylic.
